Hello, everyone! I need help with my mother-in-law's Apple computer. It's an iMac G4, and since I know very little about Apple computers, I seek everyone else's knowledge. I opened up the bottom to look to see if it had an AirPort card, and there was nothing in those little slots. Can anyone recommend a certain type of card that would work best? Or if there even different kinds of AirPort cards?

I'm basically trying to get the Internet on the iMac, but not really sure how. I kinda read some support forums on the Apple website, but I didn't really read a lot.

Thanks!!!

Re: Internet on an iMac

i would take the iMac to an Apple "Genius". i normally don't recommend this, cuz their IQ i've found is not much higher than a Fry's sales associate..

but under your circumstance (with the old G4 and all), it just may save you some headaches.

but to put it out there, a good resource to get all things Mac (new or old) is www.welovemacs.com. they still carry some obsolete parts that's hard to find otherwise.

Re: Internet on an iMac

LBL, we should be able to get this figured out for you. did the fry's thieves confirm your exact model? can you share that with us? i've been reading this site, hoping to gain some resolution for you, but need to know your G4 specs.

Re: Internet on an iMac

2na, No, they didn't confirm.  All I asked was for a Mac... I guess I should have been more specific, but I figured they'd know.  Next time, I'll know to ask here first instead of assuming they know.

Umm.. what specs do you need to know?  Let me know and I can look at it.

Thanks!!!!!

Re: Internet on an iMac

Okay, so we went to the Apple store.  They didn't have anything for an older G4, which is understandable.  They told me to try buying a wireless USB adapter cuz that'd probably be the easiest and cheapest... SOOOOO...  after that, we went to Fry's Electronics, strolled our way to the Networking department, and asked which USB adapter they had for a Mac.  The sales person handed me a box for an AIRLINK-101 AWLL3028 Wireless 802.11g Slim USB 2.0 Adapter.  I asked him three times if this would work.  He said yes.  We purchased it, went home, and discovered that the CD to install is Windows compatible, not for Macs.  Yell  All I need is a driver for it, so I search..... and search the internet on my laptop for some type of driver compatible with Mac.  I find a couple of things but I can't get them to work...

So all in all, I'm getting frustrated that I'm not  familiar with Mac OS....

Frys is full of thieves and liars - sadly, now you have discovered this the same way i did.. Get your receipt and take it back and try to get your money back (but don't hold your breath - they're thieves, remember?)..
Then.. take your money and go somewhere else - before buying anything else, look on the box - if it does not say it's made for a Mac - and YOUR model, it wont work.

Re: Internet on an iMac

I tried to plug in the ethernet cable, but I couldn't get it to pull up the Internet. It kept saying server not found. Like I said, I really don't know how to use that system... and I wasn't sure how to configure it. I was gonna go to an Apple store and get their opinion, but then again I didn't want them to try to sell me something too expensive.

I have wireless already on my laptop, which is a Compaq, and would prefer the iMac to also be wireless due to where the modem is located. (Right next to the TV)... I'm not really sure if it's a newer G4 or an older G4.. it does look like the one Hot2na posted, though.

so it is an older one. if you feel like you will be pressure sold, then avoid Best Buy, and go to an Apple store and ask. the team at the genius bar will take care of you. or call their 800 number.

Re: Internet on an iMac

is it the older iMAC G4? if it's a newer one then you can get an AirPort Extreme card which will be cheaper and faster and available new. if it's an older G4 iMac then you'll need to find an original 802.11B AirPort card (no Extreme in the name, very important distinction). these can only be bought used and are a little more expensive.

Re: Internet on an iMac

well i managed to find a pic of one. and it looks like it does have a spot for the airport card, however, why not just use the ethernet port?

Internet on an Apple iMac

i was going to ask the same thing.. i'm not familiar with the G4's, but why not just use the RJ-45/Internet jack? Does that model not come with one? If it does, just plug-in and surf!
