So I get in the back seat of my buddies car and find his 3G iPod laying on the floor board. He says it's toast and he's getting rid of it. I offered to look into it for him before he bought a new one. It was giving an error that directed him to apple support for repair. His HD was spinning and grinding. It wouldn't show up in iTunes or as an external drive. I couldn't restore it or reset it. I decided to take it apart and get the HD info to get him some quotes for replacement. When browsing for a tutorial on getting in without trashing it I found out it might be easy to fix. I opened it up and unhooked the HD. Waited. Hooked it back up and it fired right up. I updated it and recharged it. He's gonna back up his library from it and hope it doesn't happen again too soon. My point being that this was very easy. He was going to buy a new one (which isn't bad) but he can't really afford it right now. The error was of the folder with an exclamation point and also the sad faced iPod with exclamation point. So yeah, if yours craps out give it a shot. It took about 10 minutes total. Most of that was getting it open without trashing the cover.

OK so besides this is not a ipod week for my house...long story that involves police that I will blog about later. This is what a ipod video looks like after it has gone thought the washer and dryer. I'm sure your good izzle but this would take a act of God. I'm so bumbed <insert mega cus words here>.....
Wow!!!! I would think there was too much going against this one to fix. First being soaked then subjected to high heat. Have you tried plugging everything back in and seeing if you still have power? Of course don't do that until it completely dries. I've seen cell phones survive being dropped in a toilet and soaking for several minutes before it could be retrieved. So, let it dry for several days, then hook things back up and try to turn it on. Who knows it may work again.

well I guess I should have taken a closer pic of the board but it's melted in areas (high heat). There is no brining that baby back to life. Plus the kids have already had fun with it - you know seeing how it really works.
Oh on another note - I did my blog (just finished it) but it's like reading a book - really long (oh well my rant), it's here
Keep it for spare parts, like a cracked screen or click wheel. You never know. Hell the HD might have survived but it's doubtful.

I accidently washed (and almost dried) my son's $400 Ipod.....he went and bought another one, but the less gig one, the original one he bought wasnt available anymore, (after he tried everything to fix his original one, including hair dryer, taking it apart, everything)..then he found out for $30 he could get a replacement one.....so he got it, then sold the second one......i thought he was gonna kill me for washing it, but I can only check so many pockets!!!
Where do you get a replacement one for $30.00 - OMG I would love to know that one....
We had an issue with Boyfriend'd Ipod that I for him for Christmas right before he left for Iraq (Dec. 2005)... The earphone jack wouldn't work... well it would only play out of one speaker.... this is 2 years after we bought it...
He bought one of those little tools made for opening Ipods... (strangely it looks worthless and it's almost been thrown away multiple times) and had been waiting for someone to put a fried Ipod on Craigslist so he could switch the pieces...
After a lot of frustration, and him finding someone selling an 80Gig (his is 30) for $100... (the screen was broken or something) I remembered *lightbulb* I had bought the 3 year warranty... only, as long as it worked, it was useless, even though it was scratched to hell from Iraq...
We took it in, and they replaced it with a refurbished one within the week... (they gave him the option to send it in and fix it, or replace with a refurbished on)... all nice and shiny! It works fine... and he's a lot happier (he was annoyed that his was scratched... blamed it on me and his family for not sending protective casing to him fast enough in Iraq) And I put some screen protectors on it for him.
He had been a little worried of breaking it, so just remember that if you bought the warranty... DON'T FORGET ABOUT IT... like we had... *sweatdrop* -_-'
Good job to those who are brave enough to open it themselves... and if you guys really are worried, there IS a tool made to open those.. cheap on ebay too.

I saw that tool too but my friend didn't want to spend any money if he might have to buy a new one, so I risked my fingers with a knife. I should punch him for that. I too have a warranty from Best Buy on my iPod. I might has well have bought a bag of dirt instead. My iPod won't charge on a car charger any more. The same charger will charge other iPods of several different generations but not mine. I tried other models of car chargers and nothing. It will charge by USB from my computer and the wall charger. I went to Best Buy and ran it down for them. They kept my iPod for a few days and said the problem is not covered since it involves a third party device and diagnostic checks of my iPod show no problems.

That's crap... because it's the Ipod that's not working... not the chargers... then again, maybe they have a loophole since it charges with the wall and USB chargers...
That would be like them saying they can't do anything for us because it involves the headphones and not the Ipod itself....... lol... I can just imagine them then trying to explain how we're supposed to listen to it...
Well I'm sorry that the warranty didn't work out for ya... guess that's how we felt when it couldn't do anything about the scratches even though we could barely read the screen...
I think we got off easier than most because we came RIGHT before the techs got off... it was like 5PM... so the guy was just trying to leave lol... we had barely said anything when he told us what he could do... seemed to be in a rush... and didn't seem to care whether the Ipod was fine or not...

In a way it's a mixed blessing. The battery can only be charged x number of times. By not charging it all the time maybe I'll get extra life out of it. It's only a problem if I forget to charge it one day.
