I am: Easily distracted

The wife and I went and saw I am Legend over the Christmas break. It's been a while since I've spent the whole movie on the edge of my seat clenched in anticipation. Will Smith is one of my favorite actors even though he may not be the best actor. The movie is amazing. I'm a sucker for end of world, nature takes back over kind of stuff. The concept of the movie is a virus is manipulated to kill cancer. It goes awry of course and every one dies. Every one except Dr. Robert Neville, virologist. Funny how a virologist is the only one immune to a killer virus. So, Dr. Neville spends his days working on cure and trying to contact other possible survivors.  That's all good and well but if all the bridges have been destroyed how do survivors get to you......Boats? Every summer my dad used to have to buy a new lawn mower because he didn't know gas goes bad. How does Dr. Neville's gas stay fresh? Dr. Neville comments on how the "dark seekers" showed a total break down of human survival instincts because they allowed themselves to be exposed to the sun once. Is it really he who has broken down and is losing grip with his human instincts? Chasing his dog into an unsafe area? Talking to mannequins?

Any way, I'd completely recommend this movie to action/ sci fi fans. Or if you love seeing Will Smith looking ripped with no shirt on.  Oh, and this is apparently a remake of Mega man a Charlton Heston film, or so the father in law says. I'm gonna check that out to.

I am Legend

(finally) saw I Am Legend last night on BlueRay.. A bit of a combination of vampires+Omega Man+"28 Days" (28 Days was great, BTW) ..
TheGeek thought it was TOO scary (or suspenseful).. I enjoyed it though. I found no inconsistencies with the animals not getting sick (they were immune to the airborn strain).. The only part i dont get is the name "I am Legend" ? where did that come from?

Even though I paid $25 for the BlueRay (just got the player, this was my first Blue Ray disc), I would still say it's worth it, and absolutely worth renting..

On the Hubby-Scale of 1-10, I give I Am Legend a 7 ..

So this disc was with buying or blue ray?  My question is, Is Blue Ray worth upgrading too? I have a regular tv. The screen is flat but it's not a panel tv.

Will you get the same quality of viewing if you have a flat screen vs. flat panel? Yes! But if your T.V. does not have high definition capabilities (1080p/1080i), then it will NOT make a difference in the picture quality. Keep that in mind if you are wanting to purchase a Blu-ray.

Re: I am Legend

Correct me if I'm wrong but, The reason why it's named I am Legend is because he was the only survivor in NY and he invented the cure for the disease (towards the end)and gave it to the girl that left to the "Safety town" and he gave up his life to rescue her and get the cure serum over to doctors that can make more of it to save the world and go back to normal. (sorry i don't remember the names, i'm really bad at remembering people's names.)

I didnt get what you meant by "..he gave up his life".. then someone at work mentioned to me that in the theatrical release he dies at the end.. We watched the "alternate" version on BluRay, where they all leave happily, looking for "the camp" at the end..

It's actually called I am Legend cause, in the book, he was actually the last man on earth.  So how we perceive monsters and such as legends, he became the legend or the myth.  Because in a world full of monsters he was the different one.  The one out there hunting them.

Re: I am Legend

Is this too old a post to revive?

I was really disappointed with "I Am Legend" - seemed cheesy, and that ending was really weird and abrupt, and it threw me off. Some of my friends mentioned really liking it, and claimed it so "so scary" at the theatre, but they are liars.

The film was based off a book by Richard Matheson, who's a fairly famous horror/science fiction writer. Also? The monsters were originally vampires, not zombies, which I thought detracted a lot from the storyline.

Re: I am Legend

Never too late to revive Smile There were lots of people, including my 8-year old stepson, who felt the movie wasn't scary at all. To me it was scary in that it was a possibility in real life.

I didn't like the inconsistencies in the movie. I mean, there were lions running around unbothered--why weren't they sick? Questions like that.

Re: I am Legend

Exactly. Why were the zoo animals healthy while dogs were getting infected? I did cry one tear when Will Smith's dog got diseased, though. It seemed choppy to me; the story just didn't flow. It's like they pasted a bunch of fragments together and called it a day.

As for it being a possibility? One of my friends is always telling me that zombies will overtake the earth, and I don't think it's supposed to be a joke. Check out "World War Z" - totally fictional, but probably entertaining.

There may have been infected zoo animals and maybe we just didn't see them. They would only come out at night and he only came out during the day with a couple of rare exceptions. So maybe we just didn't see them. Good point though.

True, maybe we didn't see them. It was about three years since it broke out though, right? I don't see how those animals would've been able to stay uninfected for that long on their own.

Overall, I liked the story and the concept of it. I also cried when Sam died Cry

That is interesting. I never thought about the fact that it could have been him that set up the trap. He was getting kinda loopy from no other human contact. I love that they really got into the small details of the character. All the little things that one would do when they have no other contact with people.

Re: I am Legend

I loved this movie! I am a Will Smith fan too, but the original storyline for this movie is a bit different and yes, the Charlton Heston version was kinda close but the book is way different. Anyway, I bought this movie immediately, special edition and all. Hint: there is a secret alternative ending which actually explains more than the original ending, but if you watch the movie close enough, there is a way to figure some things out that the secret 'alternate' ending shows.

Well, that's my say in it. Definitely worth spending the money to see if anything rest, but also worth buying if you are an avid movie goer.

5 Stars!!!

*nods* So do I--that's why I rented the alternate version first. Definitely worth buying! I use Netflix for my rentals because the nearest rental (at least with up-to-date rentals) are about an hour away from the house. It's also cheaper to just to a monthly plan, in our case.

Re: I am Legend

I definitely loved the movie--in fact, I just saw the alternate version last night on DVD. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but I kinda liked the ending in the alternate version instead of the one released in the theaters. With the alternate ending, it could definitely lead off into some sort of mini-series (not that the theatrical release wouldn't be able to do the same).

I really liked the feeling you got watching the movie. I felt for Dr. Neville because he was lonely (aside from his dog).

They've made two previous versions of this movie, based on a book if I remember correctly. One had Heston, one had Vincent Price. Both were considered awful. I've seen none of the three thus far...

But I do like Will Smith. All the movies where he's essentially the same sort of character doing the same sort of things, like saving the world or whatever, are his best. My fav is "I, Robot". I've seen it like a dozen times.

I am: Easily distracted

Re: I am Legend

The trap was definitely set by the dark seekers. They watched him and learned. Dr. Neville said the Dark Seekers were losing there basic human instincts but really it was Dr. Neville. The Dark Seekers had "leaders" of sorts. When they attacked Dr. Neville's house you see the main Dark Seekers directing the charge.

"I'm just like you only shorter."

Re: I am Legend

You think it was the dark seekers? I couldn't tell.
I think the ending was left open for another movie...
