How to Change File Associations using Vista

How to Change File Associations in Windows Vista.

File associations are basically what program opens when you open a file. For example, if you try to open a Microsoft Word Doc, the machine knows that ".doc" is the file extension and that it needs to use Microsoft Word to open it. Microsoft Word also now uses ".docx". The "x" tells the system that it is a 2007 Office file. Likewise the changes have been added to other 2007 Office file like Powerpoint (now ".pptx") and Excel (now ".xlsx")

How to repair XP on an OEM box without the CD

I found a nice disc image that will give you access to the Microsoft Recovery Console for doing repairs to XP. I have a Sony Vaio desktop running Windows Home XP. It's an OEM version of XP so I don't have an actual copy of XP. This used to be a big problem when XP wouldn't boot and I knew all I needed was to get to the Recovery Console. The OEM disc only allowed me to reformat and re-install XP. I don't really use that computer much any more because Windows is so finicky. Recently I've been playing with dual boot options.
