This works. I used to work for a cell phone store. You have to have a cell phone and a current cell phone contract. Call your cell phone carrier and tell them you are going on vacation to Europe and you need them to unlock your phone. They will send you an unlock code and instructions how to unlock your phone. Now you are free to use any network.

Go to a cell phone store preferrable one in a truck stop. You can't go to a t mobile store and do this they will know what's up.

You tell the clerk you need a new sim card. Which will change your phone number Buy the card. It can be from any carrier. Activate the card. Which you don't need the cell phone company to do. The clerk can do it for you there. Now you are using a cell phone for free. Let your friends know your new number.

This may be illegal. I know a LOT of people who do this:) Basically you are running under the radar. It would be best to do this when your current contract is expiring. Just make sure you have your phone unlocked before you cancel your contract.

Re: How to use cell phone for free

Yes and no. You can get a sim card that's not prepaid. You just have to get it from the source I suggested. You can buy replacement sims for any phone and from any carrier at the type of establishment I suggested. No texting will not work. If the service provider doesn't unlock your phone then theres no sense in doing this. It could void the phone warranty. I'm not saying everyone should do this. But some can if they want. I don't care about my phone. I paid 200.00 for it three years ago and if the warranty is voided I could care less. I'd just go purchase one online. Also I have a friend who I can get unlock codes from for any phone. So that won't be a problem. I've been using this method for a year and I've never had to replace my sim.

But those are good things to consider and thanks for warning people.

Re: How to use cell phone for free

This is inaccurate insofar as it is not free phone service at all. The SIM card you purchase is actually pre-paid phone service, which means you pay for it upfront. When the pre-paid amount runs out you have to add money to it to continue getting phone service or pay for a new pre-paid SIM card. Depending on your phone usage, pre-paid service is usually more expensive than contract service so if your goal is to save money, this will not be something you want to do (unless you actually are going abroad and want to purchase temporary service from a local provider instead of paying international rates).

Also, a few things to keep in mind: This only works for GSM phones. There are different laws about the legality of doing this in different countries. The service provider may not agree to unlock the phone even if you are traveling. This may void your phone warranty. You are still bound by any service contract you are currently under. Features other than phone service may not work if you do this (text messages may or may not work depending on the provider and other services, such as internet access, usually do not work). It's a pain in the butt to keep changing phone numbers.
