Window Media Player is like a 600lb Gorilla....it's just their unless you try to mess with it.

I like using DBpoweramp audio Player for MP3 and Quicktime for Videos.

Unfortunately few programs have wmv emulation and that is the only tine I reluctantly
mess with the Clunkyly slow ass backward thing that takes too long to load and to long
to run as it tries to both update itself as well as provide uselss information (nevermind wasting bandwith and slowing down the internet connection) and "verification for your files...pffft.

You can actually load porky pigs "that's all folks and shut it down and reload it in DBpoweramp 10 times before it plays in Window's media player once.

As far as "Removing it" . no, it is fundamental Windows intergratd Sound so removing what is basically the windows sound system even when there is a actual sound card installed can cause Windows to come unstable and Crash.

Just turn off all the file associations and remove the shortcuts from the Desktop and Start bar. Windows Media Player will mind it's own business as long as media files other then wmv are set to run with other programs.

Have you tried...

Control Panel->Add and Remove Programs->Add and Remove Windows Components->uncheck Media Player ?

I've tried removing WMP before, that won't work. It won't get rid of the folder, and then when you try deleting it yourself it just re-appears. I'm pretty sure you need to do registry editing, but I wouldn't recommend trying that unless you won't mind reinstalling when you do something wrong.
