Hotmail issues

Hotmail issues

OK, where to start...  Boyfriend has a Hotmail account.  He rarely checks it.  He was scared he checked it so infrequently that the account would be closed, so he gave me his pw, and I check every so often.  If there's mail he needs to answer, I let him know, otherwise, he has very little interest in the computer.  Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, I told him there was an email from his sister, and he needed to check his email.  Well, when he went to check, the email, and a couple of others, had already been marked like they'd been read.  I didn't read them.  This happened a couple more times, he'd go to read an email, and it would be marked as read.  Well, we fought a bit, because he didn't believe me, whatever, I told him if he doesn't believe me, he can change his password, I won't check it for him anymore, and if the account gets closed for lack of use, so be it.  So, he changed his pw.  Well, Friday he checked his email from his job, and sure enough, there were emails that he hadn't set eyes on yet, already marked as read.  Right, there ya go, wasn't me, so there.  Again this morning, he checked, and there were more already read emails.

So, we talked about it a bit, and he thinks he knows who it is, his former roommate and coworker, nosy little bugger.  Thing is, Boyfriend doesn't think he would have guessed the new pw, it's pretty obscure.  So my question is, does anyone know if Hotmail has a loophole along the lines of a MySpace token?  If Boyfriend checked his email from the work computer, could someone have pulled something out of his history files to get back in?  I don't think he's obtaining the pw through a keylogger, simply because even if the company utilizes one, the person in question wouldn't have any access to it.  I know the token idea might be a long shot, but I'm stumped.

Re: Hotmail issues

I don't know if this seems far fetched but..have you ever thought that the person reading the mail does not have to use the more tech savvy ways to gain access (keyloggers, etc)? Tell boyfriend to check and see if his mail forwarding is on. The person who has the password the first time could have set it when they first gained access.Because if it is ..it may be possible that the unauthorized party gets notifications of emails. Or..that all the unauthorized person has to do is choose the 'forgot password' option on the account. They will receive the password and can go in and delete the notification that password has been recovered. This feature will give the person access everytime with not worry or exception. Given that Boyfriend rarely checks his inbox he sure wouldnt think to check the mail forwarding. But a nosey rosey just may..depending on how bad they want to know the information. Shame on people who infringe on other's privacy.

Re: Hotmail issues

I hadn't thought of that, thanks!  He gave me the pw again, so I'll check that tomorrow morning.  A question though...If someone used the "forgot password" option, wouldn't they have to answer the question?  He changed that when he changed his pw.

"How do you know I'm mad?" asked Alice.
"You must be", said the cat, "Or you wouldn't have come here"

Re: Hotmail issues

It sounds like your using Outlook, yes? He's not, he's just using the web service, and it's not just the first email, it's very specific, actually, it's only been the correspondences between him, his mother and his sister, so it's definitely someone being nosy. We're almost certain we know who, just can't quite figure out how.

Re: Hotmail issues

No, not Outlook, I don't like it.  Using hotmail/msn and gmail.....so....I don't know.

What gets me, is if he changed his password, then how could they log in?   Is the password change notification sent to this same email along with new password?  I wouldn't think so.  Kind of redundant, because you'd have to have the new password to sign in......nevermind me...lol

Sure will be curious to find out what you find out.   Me, I'm stumpered!

Re: Hotmail issues

All I can think of is that when I open my mail in hotmail, from my msn mail account, my email program (hotmail) opens up to my inbox.  The first mail message in my mailbox (at the top of the list of messages) is highlighted.

What happens is, that email is actually opened, even though I didn't actually double click on it to open it in a new window.  Where that message is actually opened up is below my list of messages in my inbox. In other words, there is a line running across the bottom of the inbox messages, where it shows the actual email.  I would have to left click and hold that line and move it up the page in order to see my message that is highlighted.  (You know, the email I didn't open, but is highlighted because it's at the top of my email message list in the inbox).

When I pull that line up, I can see the message in it's entirety even though I didn't open it.  You can change the settings for this.

But that makes no sense as to why the others are marked as read, others, as in, say I opened my mail and it pulled in 5 new messages.  Only the top message would be highlighted and appear at the bottom of the page.  The other 4 should be marked unread.

Or, somehow you have told your email to mark all incoming messages as 'read'.

It's all I know and it may not even apply to you.
