You may be able to file your 2006 tax return for free. Not yet up and running, but should be by January 16, 2007.  Check it out.

Visit the Help and Information page at the IRS website to see if you qualify. You'll find many answers to questions about Free File here.

The IRS website also offers Step by Step Instructions for using Free File.

Did you know? The Free File program is a free federal tax preparation and electronic filing program for eligible taxpayers developed through a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Free File Alliance LLC, a group of private sector tax software companies. Since Free File’s debut in 2003, more than 15.4 million returns have been prepared and e-filed through the program. Free File allows taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $52,000 or less in 2006 to e-file their federal tax returns for free. That means 70 percent of all taxpayers – 95 million taxpayers – can take advantage of the Free File program.

Also If you go to Turbotax.com you can file for free also. Federal and state

thanks Lynn. I usually mail mine in but it says you get it 2 weeks quicker. True? Maybe I should break down and just get Turbo Tax

E-filing is much quicker and even quicker yet if you do direct deposit.

With Turbo Tax it does the filing electronically for you and gives you confirmation that your returns were received. I also did my state taxes that way. If I remember correctly my refund was deposited into my bank account within 6 days, which was really nice!

If I  am correct you can get Turbo Tax through here at GuG.  Geek?  Can you or hubby post a link on this page to get Turbo Tax through Amazon?  If so, great and thank you!

I also HIGHLY recommend Turbo Tax, very very user friendly.  It's great at helping to find deductions that you would have never thought of.  It even has special sections for different areas.  Example I live in South Florida in the area that for 3 years in a row were declaired "disaster areas" due to hurricanes (last year was $52,000. in damages).  Turbo tax was great for helping me claim all of the damage I had and answering questions about it.  Also if you use it year after year it transfers your info and makes the next years filing even easier.

Lynn you seem to be an expert on this.There are so many sites for free filing. can you recommend on that is the best and safest (I don't mind paying).  ThanksLucky

Let me do some research and see which is recommended. Just got home for the day. I'll have an answer for you by tomorrow.

I have never free filed myself. Last year I used Turbo Tax for the first time and I was quite surprised that it didn't hurt me too much. Eye-wink

Lucky123,

I did just a little bit of looking and there is one place I saw that says

"Authorized IRS software developer, efile tax return provider, and IRS eFile Partner. We meet or surpass IRS security policies and recommendations"

I would tend to lean more towards a company like this, but just because they say something, it doesn't mean its true. The place above was tax head. You can find it on the link of browsing on the IRS website, linked for you above in the original post.

My suggestion is going to be, to type in their company name and BBB for Better Business Bureau to see if there is any negative/positive feedback from the public.

I also noticed that you can find someone who is in the state you reside in. Finding info on them through the BBB should work.

I'll try to run some searches myself tomorrow and see what I can come up with. 

Another thing I have done with business names, is to type their name in a search and also type negative feedback, public opinion, etc along with their name to see if anything comes up with that search term.
