Re: having issues with computer

On your mom's PC, did Windows ever load successfully after the CPU replacement?  Did you reinstall Windows after replacing the CPU?  Hmmm.  It's odd that it gets to the logon screen and hangs.  Doesn't make me think it's a hardware problem or a hardware abstraction layer issue but I haven't run into all problems out there either.  Were it mine, I might do a repair install of Windows.

On your bro's eMachine... might be a PSU or a bad power button.

Since you seem to know your way around a PC as far as MB's, voltages and stuff, I'll throw this in:

With the PC turned on, check one of the unused molex connectors with a multimeter.  Set the multimeter on volts and check to see if there is any juice coming out: Molex pin voltages are yellow:12v, red:5v, black:ground.

Also might be a bad power button on the eMachine.  You can check this by going to the corner of the motherboard where the front panel connections (power switch, power LED, HDD light, etc) are.  Most PCB's have the pins labeled.  You want to find the two power switch pins ("pwr" or "pwr sw") - first make sure this is plugged in securely - loose connection here might be the problem.  Unplug, reconnect and try to power on.  If not, then try to physically connect these two power switch pins with each other using a very small screwdriver.  You will need to remove the power switch plug to get to these two pins.  If the PC starts, the problem is with the power button or its connections.
