An acquaintance of mine has something weird going on with her msn. I got a message last night saying 'hey check this... http://very.c00l-stuff.com brb...!!' I was away from my computer and she wasn't online when I got back so I didn't click it. I asked her today about it and it wasn't her. She went off to virus check her computer and change her password. Thought it would all be sorted.

I just got *another* message like that, only this time it says http://evegiff.imagehosters.info. evegiff is the first part of her email.

Okay, so. What can this be, and how to get rid of it? If she's changed her password I am guessing a keylogger, but am open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Re: Hacked msn - help?

Sounds like maybe she was phished. To do a keylogger someone would have to have access to her PC or if they did a remote keylogger (which are illegal) they would have had to send her a file she would have had to click on to download (a executable file) you cant just embed one in a email with out them preforming some action (downloading). My guess is that she was phished (maybe a fake log in page). Tell her to change her password and yes run a virus scan. She might want to also run spybot search and destroy to look for any malware (its a free program).

Re: Hacked msn - help?

Are you saying that people can get keyloggers from emails even if they dont click on any links??? So just opening a email can give you a keylogger???? How did you find that out?

Re: Hacked msn - help?

No you can't.  There are programs that use remote keyloggers but you have to download them still even if they are in a email.  Just opening a email will not auto install them.  We really don't discuss remote keyloggers here on gug much because in most cases they are used illegally.

Re: Hacked msn - help?

But, if she changed her password after it happened the first time and then it happened again, how would this be possible?

Just to make sure we fully destroy whatever it is Laughing out loud Also, I love Spybot <3

Re: Hacked msn - help?

any chance she signed up with a site which wasn't legit or something?

I don't know much about this but I wouldn't have thought it was a keylogger mainly as if she has changed her password someone would have to look through everything again just to send that link to people in her list. If someone was just playing about on her msn i'd think they wouldn't just post links.

Like I said I don't know i'd have thought maybe a virus on her computer which would explain it posting links and nothing else and would keep doing it when she changed her password. I'm sure a friend of mine had one like this a few years back on her msn.

Tell her to virus check and update her viruschecker and things and ask her if she has d/l any msn scripts which may have had a virus in them.

Re: Hacked msn - help?

Shall ask her what she has been signing up to Smiling

Thing is, her computer was off and she was in bed when they were sent, so it must be something remote doing it...
