ok i got another question/poll. what do you think is the best guitar solo ever? or how about who is just a kick 4$$ guitar player?

my vote is for slash, formerly of Guns n' Roses, late of velvet revolver. he doesn't even look like he "plays" the guitar, more like the music just flows out of his fingers. it seems he manages at least two awsome solos a song, lol, heck i think november rain has 3, even though i love the gritty old stuff. anywho thats my opinion. whats yours?

Re: guitar solos?

I know one thing, technical ability means almost nothing when compared to melody, texture and memorability. There are plenty of guitarists that can easily play all of the songs mentioned here, its not the speed of you're hands its the sound the guitar makes. Its almost impossible to tell the difference between two shred metal solos, but every one knows the opening of sweet child'o mine, which as guitar playing goes is a pretty easy riff and of course Slash could have made an intro with a thousand notes but why when you have something as great as that?

Jimi Hendrix is the best there ever was, yet his most memorable song is little wing which is definitely not his most complicated.

A great song, solo or riff, gets under you're skin, it becomes a part of you, its stuck with you from the moment you hear it.

Re: guitar solos?

Edge's solo in The Fly was awesome, masterful use of the wah pedal.

Don Felder's (NOT JOE WALSH'S!) solo in One of these nights is a perfect example of his proficiency with string bending. and Hotel California's solo was executed with such precision that most people don't realize until seeing it live that it is performed by two soloists (Felder and Walsh) playing in alternation.

to the haters out there don't go posting "U2 sucks" or "I Hate the f****ng Eagles man" just because I mentioned them in a positive manner. Biased opinions don't count as truth, its absolutely pointless to hate bands you're just taking time away from the music you like, If you don't like it don't listen.

just thought I'd stop the flame war in advanced, because both U2 and the Eagles are the most loved and hated bands on the planet.

Man I'm neurotic.

Re: guitar solos?

The thing with Saul Huddson (Slash) is that his soloing style is actually sloppy! Which makes him even more amazing to me 'cos the guy is totally a legend but any professional guitarist and tutor who knows what they're talking about can tell you the same thing - he is sloppy.

Re: guitar solos?

I like a lot of Zakk Wylde's stuff,... he has a very distinctive sound and thoughtful phrasing with his leads and chord work.

On the same note (pun!), I also like the playing of Steve Stevens, Craig Chaquico, David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Andy Summers, and Joe Perry.

I've been playing guitar since the mid 70's and I've grown somewhat tired of listening to (and playing) solos based on cliched blues scales.  However, some well-placed blues solos still give me chills.  The sound I get with my current rig and style is sort of a Van Halen/Angus Young blend.  Smiling

I appreciate the effect that ground-breaking artists like Jimi, Jimmy Page and EVH have had on modern music.  And also - if anyone listens to much country music, you will probably notice electric guitarists (usually playing Telecasters) that are several levels above the normal popular rock/distortion guitarist.

TELESPANK!, sorry had to say it.

But yeah I notice the distortion in country music now that you mention it,  wonder why it wasn't obvious before?

Re: guitar solos?

I always joke about getting a Dimebag tribute tattoo. I think one Pantera tattoo is enough. As embarrassing as it is I have Domination across my shoulders and yes it really is a Pantera tattoo and not what you're thinking. Haha. But seriously, it'd be Dime's grave with his hand coming out of the freshly piled earth holding his guitar. There'd be a medicine man dancing just in side the cemetary gates. Maybe a message written in blood from Dime himself. Man it'd be sweet.

Re: guitar solos?

You are right on about GNR having some awesome guitar solos. Here's a few other guitar players that I like:

Dimebag Darrell Abbott from Pantera

Dave Mustaine from Megadeth

Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin

And I hate the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but no doubt Flea is a great bassist.

A band I do like with a good bassist is Geezer Butler and Black Sabbath.

You have my vote for Slash...in his genre...but i gotta say, David Gilmour (Pink Floyd lead guitar) definitely has pure velvet coming from his soul, out of his speakers. He can make anything PLAY!!
