Grant money? What's legit?

A close friend and I are planning to start a business together raising and shearing alpacas, and spinning our own yarn for sale.  I know, it sounds crazy, but we're dead serious about it, and I'm pretty sure we can pull it off, with a little help.  I know that there are government grants available to help us start a farm, but I haven't the faintest idea how to find them.  I've done so much googling and reading about grants over the past few days, my eyeballs are going to start bleeding soon, but just about everything I've found has asked for $29.95 for "more information", and that just doesn't sound legitimate to me.  My next step is going to be to start contacting other alpaca breeders, and ask them how they did it, but I figured before I started making long distance calls to strangers, i'd ask here, see if anyone in my GuG family has ever done anything similar.  

So, has anyone here ever obtained a grant, for either a small business, or a farm?  How did you do it?  Where should I start?

funny.. last night on TV i saw one of those late night "get government money for free" commercials - the one that sports an old man in a stupid suit with question marks all over it trying to act hyperactive.. i decided to do some Googling, and found that virtually everything in his book, and all the other "free government money" books/scams can be found on the internet for free.. i also learned that there really is no such thing as free government money, except for a very few very, very, rare cases.. About the best that most 'normal' people can expect is low-interest loans..

That being said, i do remember seeing on 60 Minutes (or somewhere) something about good loans/programs for Alpaca farmers (or herders, or whatever you call them).. Where to find them, i have no idea..

I will check into some of my bookkeeping forums, I believe there was mention of grants about half a year ago and I may have something else, but it may refer to college grants.  I'll do some digging and in the meantime, hopefully someone will already know and post it.  

I am sure I saw something for women just going into business on a federal website....shoot,  it might have been through the IRS website since I'm always there it seems.  Or, my bookkeeping collection.
