or do we need the government knowing the content of everything we post? anybody got any thoughts on this? speak up and let us know if keyloggers that the government is having the pc manufacturers install is okay or is that just going too far? juliek HARD-WIRED KEYSTROKE LOGGERS INTO ALL NEW LAPTOP COMPUTERS!

Turner Radio Network | October 4, 2005

Devices capture everything you ever type, then can send it via your ethernet card to the Dept. of Homeland Security without your knowledge, consent or a search warrant each time you log onto the internet!

Freedom Of Information Act Requests For Explanation From DHS, refused.

I was opening up my almost brand new laptop, to replace a broken PCMCIA slot riser on the motherboard. As soon as I got the keyboard off, I noticed a small cable running from the keyboard connection underneath a piece of metal protecting the motherboard.

I figured "No Big Deal", and continued with the dissasembly. But when I got the metal panels off, I saw a small white heatshink-wrapped package. Being ever-curious, I sliced the heatshrink open. I found a little circuit board inside.

Being an EE by trade, this piqued my curiosity considerably. On one side of the board, one Atmel AT45D041A four megabit Flash memory chip.

On the other side, one Microchip Technology PIC16F876 Programmable Interrupt Controller, along with a little Fairchild Semiconductor CD4066BCM quad bilateral switch.

Looking further, I saw that the other end of the cable was connected to the integrated ethernet board.

What could this mean? I called the manufacturer's tech support about it, and they said, and I quote, "The intregrated service tag identifier is there for assisting customers in the event of lost or misplaced personal information." He then hung up.

A little more research, and I found that that board spliced in between the keyboard and the ethernet chip is little more than a Keyghost hardware keylogger .

The reasons a computer manufacturer would put this in their laptops can only be left up to your imagination. It would be very impractical to hand-anylze the logs, and very CPU-intensive to do so on a computer for every person that purchased a laptop. Why are these keyloggers here? I recently almost found out.

I called the police, as having a keylogger unknown to me in my laptop is a serious offense. They told me to call the Department of Homeland Security. At this point, I am in disbelief. Why would the DHS have a keylogger in my laptop? It was surreal.

So I called them, and they told me to submit a Freedom of Information Act request. This is what I got back:
.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Under the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) the only items exempt from public disclosure are items relating to "law enforcement tools and techniques" and "items relating to national security."

The real life implications of this are plain: Computer manufacturers appear to be cooperating with the Department of Homeland Security to make every person who buys a new computer subject to immediate, unrestricted government recording of everything they do on those computers! EVERYTHING !

This information can be sent to DHS, online, without your knowledge or consent, without a search warrant or even probable cause! That's why this device is hard-wired directly into the ethernet card, which communicates over the internet!

I am not certain how long this information will be permitted to remain online for all the world to see before the government takes some type of action to attempt to have it removed from public view. I URGE you to take copy of this page immediately and spread this information to everyone you know immediately! The more people who find out about this, the more can protect themselves and raise a HUGE outcry to force government and computer manufacturers to immediately CEASE installing these devices in new computers!

Re: if this is true...we have bigger problems in this country th

The DHS does have draconian authority and, if the cost of installing the chip(s) in question were relatively trivial (per unit) the lappie manufacturers would 'play ball' with them. Period. There are too many regulatory hoops that they have to jump through for them to be dissing the government. And money, not integrity, is the bottom line.

The manufacturers won't put anything in a computer that YOU want for free; but you don't hold an axe over their necks. The gubmint does. Several of them.

That said, the US gov't. has long had the ability to monitor the internet. Just assume that what you type IS monitored and proceed accordingly. I have a religious affiliation that they are uncomfortable with, so what I might type here does nothing more than give them a better pretext for what is to follow any way. But maybe I can wake a few others up first.

Maybe the day will come when people will take email security seriously enough to encrypt it. Right now encrypted email stands out like a sore thumb. When the volume of it gets large enough, though, the individual messages will disappear in a sea of meaningless characters. There isn't enough computing power in the world to decrypt all the email on the internet. Moreover, as one cypher is shown to be broken, others will arise. Again, the volume works in favor of privacy. Encryption means that the gov't. has to choose targets first, read later. Now they can read first and choose their targets based on that.

This day in age, if I have a choice between the "draconian gubmint" being able to easily intercept terrorists' plans of obtaining and detonating a nuke in upper New York Bay from a fishing boat or hiding my obsession with farm animals in boots, I'll give up my Internet porn sheep fetish membership in the name of surveillance.

PS.. I seriously believe that the US gubmint has plenty to worry over and doesn't give a rat's behind about anyone's foil-hat religion as long as it doesn't involve suicide robes.

NOOOOOOOO read the rest of this thread it's not true at all - a scam!

One of the moderators works (high up) at the leading manufacturer of PC's here in the US.  You can see he assures you it is not true at all.

Oh and when you request FIA materials about anything worth having they send it out redacted, they don't deny your request.

Re: if this is true...we have bigger problems in this country th

I think most of us know it and love this site:

http://www.snopes.com/computer/internet/dellbug.asp

What red flagged it to me was the date - Oct. 4, 2005? If this were true, wouldn't we have heard about it by now? Via means other than myspace bulletins?

So I'd have to declare this as an official Urban Legend, since those fine people at Snopes have known since 2005. Pretty much word for word although this debunking mentions Dell specifically.

So we can all relax a little. And put our tinfoil hats back on.

If it's true, it's probably because Metallica is still whining about illegal downloading of music and is making the RIAA stalk everyone with a laptop...

Just do what I do... blame Metallica for everything.

Re: if this is true...we have bigger problems in this country th

It's insane if this is true, but I wouldn't put anything past the government with all the wiretapping issues that have come up. I'm no conspiracy theorist or anything like that. Still, I have to wonder about the credibility. Is this the only source for this article? If so, why wouldn't anyone else have come out with a similar story? Maybe I just assume too much, but I would have thought there were a good deal of tech savvy people who like to take apart and put these things and put them together...and might have seen the same thing this person claims to have found? I have a friend who likes to mess with computers a lot, she loves the challenge of taking them apart and such. She's never mentioned seeing anything strange. I guess that's why I'm assuming a rumor of sorts would have been out there about this if anyone else had found something.

But if this were to be true. It's taking invasion of privacy to a whole new level.

How credible do you think this is? i would guess that the turner radio network is part of the turner media ''empire,'' and they have been somewhat sensationalistic ...if that's a word. anyway , just wondered what anyone thought of the article or it's contents. juliek

Re: if this is true...we have bigger problems in this country th

This is my personal opinion:

I dont think that letter from DHS is real.(the one that was written to the person who found the device in their laptop)

And all Internet activity can be traced by gov anyways without even using installed devices, so I dont think they would spend money on everyones computers (but perhaps just on people who are on a list of people being monitored)

Every telephone conversation is recorded in a database and when you say certain words that "they" would be concerned about--then your conversation gets reviewed. A "computer" listens for certain words or phrases to be said and then your conversation is reviewed. I think the internet works the same way. But, if you have nothing to hide then dont worry. There are 7 or 8 billion people on the earth, you are not one of their targets unless you make yourself.

These are my opinions.
