Sending Ma to Shady Pines- Why I love "The Golden Girls"

Growing up as a kid, I remember the nights when my grandmother would babysit me and always watch "The Golden Girls." At the time, I was young and really didn't enjoy those evenings of watching four old ladies on television talk about pace makers not working or bald men not showing up to dates; my age let all the jokes go over my head. Today though, I do watch Golden Girls and always find myself laughing up at a storm at 1am, wondering if I'm waking up the rest of my family members. The funniest character on this show is Sophia, or better known as Ma. Her daugher, Dorthy, always threatens her with "Shady Pines Ma," which is an old folks home, if she doesn't follow daugheters orders (not listening to conversations in the other room, or not driving a car while sitting on a phone book to see over the steering wheel). My most memorable joke from this show is when Blanche, the supposed "slut" of the show, has had writers block for a week and can't work on her story- Sophia chimes in with "try not having a bowel movement..." If you see have seen this episode, you will know what I'm talking about. The character that I still don't understand, but I think this was the writers point, is Rose. Rose is from St. Olaf, Minnesota whose husband died (before the show began)while they were making love- what a way to go!!! But Rose always tells the most random stories and usually contain some type of herring; some herring put on a little circus and would throw tiny ginsu knives.

Whether you like this or not, the ladies of this show always bring a smile to my face. If I've had a horrible day or have been sick with the flu, I always manage to laugh at one time or another when the show is on. This show also has memories of me being a child and grandma babysitting, so I will cherish those memories forever.
