I think we need a forum to post what SpyWare, FireWalls, AntiVirus Programs, etc. we've tried. What has free trials, what is worth using, what doesn't work...What we actually loved so we went out and paid for it. ( Maybe there is one but I didn't see it. ) I think I need to buy one of those BIG packages, but I know their expensive, so before I pull out the credit card, I just want to kind of hear what people think of the stuff they've tried.

Re: SpyWare, AntiVirus, Etc.

Norton usually works for the hardcore viruses...

Regular spyware and stuff I would recommend Ad-aware and Spybot

Re: hey foamy re: NOD32

So foamy, I've stepped out of the Norton cuddle puddle and decided to NOD32 off instead.

Can't quite figure out how to get it going - not sure if it's scanned yet at all. Polish blonde moment (I'll just go with that...)

So now I've enabled Windows firewall - is that all I need (along with Adaware, Spybot, AdsGone and eTrust Pest Patrol)?

Or should I get a better firewall?

Re: hey foamy re: NOD32

OK so I was having problems figuring it out too so Foamy helped me along there also.

First of all make sure you update it (click on the update button) since you just installed it I'm guessing it's updated. Then click on the "Threat Protection Modules" and go to the bottom one *NOD32 Once you click on that another window will pop up and then you click on the "In-Depth Analysis" and let it go (that is the scan). See pic:

Now Foamy told me it usually takes anywhere from 30 to 60 min. but I'll tell you mine took 1:50 mins to run (but I have a lot of stuff on my PC). I also will tell you that I sat there and watched it scan (you can see your files). When it did find a Trojan I would get a pop up that looked like this (yeah I love screen shots can you tell):

At that point you want to click the "Copy to Quarantine" "Submit for analysis" and then the "Delete" button (to remove it). Now out of the 9 Trojans it found on my PC only 5 of them I could delete the remaining 4 I had to use Panda to remove (which is another great little program to use - FREE). Hope that helps you.

So welcome to the NOD32 cuddle puddle Cool

NOD32 explained fully - now firewall??

Thanks smartmom!
You know, I think I did do it right last night then. I guess since it was so fast and quiet and didn't find anything, I thought I did the wrong scan.

Number of threats: 0

Yahoooo! So I guess Norton who has protected me for all these years was indeed doing its job! But I still can't get over how much quieter my computer is now without all those Symantec products running!

So problem solved, thanks again.

Now to the issue of a firewall - clearly Norton has been adequate if not memory-friendly. Using Windows right now and feeling a little too naked - to bittorrent, anyways. I'll have a look at what those sites suggest but of course I trust you people more.

Oh thank God it's not just me. Thanks juliek!

I did end up resetting it to a scheduled scan. Just set it for a time you know you'll be away. It scanned, I heard a sound. And then nothing. So it either means I did the wrong scan or maybe it didn't find anything.

I just figure if smartmom had so many trojans that it would find something on mine, too. At least one or *something*. Although I was pretty stealth/ blocked for the most part since I set up Norton using instructions from a bittorrent help site. But this baby - I dunno. Not the easiest UI ever, but I'm sure once we "get" it, it'll be a breeze.

Re: SpyWare, AntiVirus, Etc.

One thing I like that hasn't been mentioned is McAfee site advisor. It tells you whether a site can be trusted. Green-good, yellow-caution, red-bad and grey-unknown. It's free with an option to pay for more features. I've only seen one website I didn't agree with it's rating. It was a website for a mountain bike shop that sells things online. I know from investigating it's a fairly well respected bike shop. Who knows. Any way when you use search engines a lot it's very helpful.

adaware can be found at lavasoft(dot)com

Also go to free(dot)grisoft(dot)com and get AVG Anti-Spyware Free. Personally, I prefer that one.

Re: SpyWare, AntiVirus, Etc.

I used Norton Anti-Virus+Firewall+something else; I didn't like the firewall part in particular. I don't remember liking the other parts, but the firewall just pissed me off to no end. So I tryed uninstalling it. It kept trying to reinstall itself until I went through the registry entrys deleting anything with "Norton" "anti" "virus" "systematic" or "NIS" in it and finaly Norton stopped trying to reinstall itself. The firewall identified politically unpopular speech as "hate speech", completely out of line with the content of the website and was plain as day political censorship. I've had the same problem with the firewall that the US Federal government required that all public schools and libarys that recieve federal money; and they responded lickty split to accusations of political censorship and got that stuff unblocked pronto. Norton is less responsive to customer complaints then government bueracry.

I had the buy version of Zone Alarm firewall; didn't like it, it filtered HTML. Deleted it, no if's and's or but's.

there's a firewall under development at Sourceforge for Windows that looks like it'll be pretty good when it's done, but until then I'm keeping to built in firewalls of any various operating system. Or, hardware firewalls.

anyway;

AVG, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, Windows Defender, and that plus the firewall built into Windows XP and that's it.

I, too, had Zone Alarm Pro, and didn't like it.  Can't remember what it did, maybe it was the same as Isaac's problem with HTML .  Went back to the free Zone Alarm Basic in addition to Panda's firewall.

Re: SpyWare, AntiVirus, Etc.

I have had the last 3 versions of WebrootSpySweeper which updates definitions what seems like daily. It seems to block everything, seeming how everytime I run a sweep, "None are Found". Also in the "options" there is a setting for checking for Rootkits.

That being said though, How does one know if a Spy Sweeper of any kind is actually doind a complete job?

Is like hiring a Security Guard to check your house, He comes back and says its all clear, but he never checked the closets!!!!!

Kinda like " you dont know what you dont know" ya know?!

As a Anti-virus I have, Trend Micro. Which seems to not do to my system what Norton did for years. It runs smoothly and so far has been flawless.

Re: SpyWare, AntiVirus, Etc.

I have the Trend Micro Antivirus as well... seems to work fine...

As for SpySweeper, a while back I found Xoftspy, that when downloaded for free, it scans eeeevvveerrryyythhhiiinnnggg... and seems to consider just about everything some sort of adware or malware... it will give you the locations, but won't erase it for you if you have the free version... anyway, to the point, I've run that on occasion, and besides typical files and cookies that it always finds that aren't really anything, it's found nothing. So I believe in my spysweeper... not to mention, the warranty I have on it says that if something does get loaded onto my computer, I can throw my computer at the people I bought it from and they HAVE to fix it... (keep in mind my ability to throw my computer at someone and still have it fixed lies within my 'accidental coverage' warranty that I also purchased, so that's not recommended if you don't have that.)

Re: SpyWare, AntiVirus, Etc.

I run Webroot SpySweeper which has worked wonders for me. It's not exactly free, but it tells you whenever something tries to change your settings.. it tells you if something you're trying to access is on it's 'block' list (which has saved me a few times from my curiosity clicking my mouse) I've had it since August and haven't had one spyware issue... or virus issue... or anything... before, the longest I could go without receiving some sort of malware was about 3 weeks...

Free:Comodo Firewall

Free:Spybot

Free: Zone Alarm Firewall

Worth paying for: NOD 32 (has spyware and anti-phishing along with anti-virus) and Kapersky AV

Not worth it: Anything from Norton or McAfee, AdAware (likes to call programs it doesn't recognize spyware) and the junk they give you for free from the major ISP's for AV and firewall

Yes they are all compatible together, each one has its own area to keep tabs on and they do not interfere with each other, the only time you might have a problem is when you have a suite like zonealarm that does firewall/antivirus/spyware at the same time it doesn't like when you add on other programs to help it do its job, and several all in one programs like zone alarm suite also have issues with some normal software applications like P2P software and some desktop enhancements

Im not a real geek, " I just play one on TV".....but all I know is when I had Norton it wreaked havoc on my system. I had it for 2-3 yrs.I dont know if it was compatibility issues, or the operating size of its system but once I switched to Trend Micro all issues I had with my system were gone. Why that is, Im not smart enough to answer, but I just learn as I go. If it doesnt work fix it, if it aint broke dont touch it!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: SpyWare, AntiVirus, Etc.

Someone let me know if it’s changed, but when I had Norton, it was reactive rather than proactive.   I’d have to perform a scan to find out if there was a virus on my system.  Three years ago, I switched to Panda Platinum and it zaps viruses as there appear, and protects against unknown threats.  I also receive multiple updates a day.  When I first started using p2p sites, I downloaded a couple of viruses (now I’ve learned what to look for), but Panda eliminated them as soon as the files were opened.   Since switching, I’ve never had a problem.  I’d better lay off ‘cause I’m beginning to sound like a paid spokesperson!!  I just feel that by using it, I’ve avoided many a headache.

Re: SpyWare, AntiVirus, Etc. (<3 NOD32)

Yeah - Norton has changed. You can set it up to update as often as you want and to scan as often as you want. I't will also update any other Symantic programs (such as PC Anywhere - which I use for working at home to dial into my work server). So far knock on wood I haven't had any problems with it. But like I also said I also run Adware and Spybot Search and Distroy.

UPDATE:  OK scratch my last answer of loving Norton!!!!!!!!!!!  Why do I say that well a few days ago STUPID me uploaded a d@mn Trojan.  Now three scans later Norton said noooooo all is fine.  Well I can tell you all was not fine at all and I knew it!   So I took the great Foamy advice (can I add that he is my hero cuz the poor guy spent many hours holding my hand and walking me thru this crap) and I uninstalled Norton and installed NOD32.  So I ran NOD32 and holly crap I had 9 Trojans.  NOD32 cleaned 5 of the 9 and the other 4 I was able to clean via Panda (another great) program.  So all is well in the pc world at smartmom's house and Foamy is now her new hero *smooch - BIG kiss Kiss for Foamy*.

So needless to say I am now a loyal fan of NOD32

Also one that would be good (recommended) for parent with teenage kids (like me).  My kids are not allowed on my computer (I have a lot of work on it) so they each have thier own computer.  So I'm looking for a good one to protect them.   Also looking for a good key logger that will email me the info without having to physically go in and log it to their computers.   Great forum jddprncss
