Geek

A geek is an individual who is fascinated by knowledge and imagination, usually electronic or virtual in nature. Geek may not always have the same meaning as the term nerd. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word geek as "1: a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake 2: a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked 3: an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity," though these are only three of many definitions. .... While being described as a geek tends to be an insult, the term has recently become less condescending, or even a badge of honor, within particular fields and subcultures; this is particularly evident in the technical disciplines, where the term is now more of a compliment denoting extraordinary skill. Geeks are growing in popularity. There is an increasing number of people who self-identify with the term, even when they are nontechnical or do not fit the classic geek archetype.

A grown Up Geek (other wise known as a GUG) was in his / her younger years awkward. While in his or her younger years in high school they were known as a friend. A friend who always helped out the "in" crowed with their homework and term papers yet never became part of the "in" crowd. Young Geeks often sat alone at lunch (or with a teacher), belonged to the chess or debate clubs, never went to proms or we sat alone dateless at them and we were the last to be picked at team sports in PE. Younger Geeks tend to live quite, shy and lonely lives. However a Grown Up Geek (GUG) is the one who shows up at their class reunion in a expensive car, dressed in a designer or custom made outfit with a trophy date or spouse. While the former "in" crowd looks on and wonders "who is that?". Yes while you were out parting and living it up we were home preparing for our futures. We were in training for our Grown Up Geek (GUG) years. Now we run the successful businesses, those same ones that you applied for to work in the mail room or custodial position hoping to one day work your way up. Our hard work and lonely years helped pay our ways to become the successful Grown Up Geek (GUG) that we are today. A Grown Up Geek (GUG) are truly the older "in" crowd. Grown Up Geeks (GUG) are looked at and admired by many.
