I had a friend telling me thathe was planning on going for free air tv. From what he said and by my understanding, the idea is that airwaves are really free, but satellite companies cap them so they can make money. Its my understanding that if you buy a dish, you can get software off the internetthat will decode the companies prevention, essentually. Its totally legal.
I guess my question is, does anyone know anything about this? I really don't understand a lot and wikipedia makes it seem a lot harder them my friend made it sound...

It is totally "ILLEGAL" to decode a satellite company's signal such as Dish or Directv There are however, some satellite signals that are called "Free to Air" that can be viewed by anyone with the right satellite dish and receiver. Repeat, it is highly illegal to buy programs that descramble signals of Dish or Directv, and this can result in serious fines and jail time.
Here is a forum on FTA which could answer your questions.
