Ok,

If you are not sure you want to run Linux, but were always curious to how it looks/feels, this is for you. Or heck, if you have a machine with no hard drive, this is for you too! Eye-wink

http://www.knoppix.org/

This site (choose English if you cant read it) allows you to create a Linux boot cd/dvd, so that you can boot Linux, and run Linux, off of a cd image. Quite nice, and it is good for troubleshooting your Linux install if you are having issues, as it will mount your local Linux drives when it boots.

Re: Great way to testdrive Linux

I am getting a flashback to the first time I ever typed Dir/w in DoS and felt overwhelmed in deciding what  was it I needed...lol (THis is why the less "computer Savy" buy MACs)

Exactly which file(s)  creates the  Bootable CD?

Re: Great way to testdrive Linux

Alright, now that I found a CD bootable of Adios after 3 weeks of weeding through various websites and having to read much more then I ever had to to learn Windows which came with the system, turn it on, and hit the IE button to start surfing the net.

Tested it today and it took 15 minutes to boot v.s. 20 seconds of my streamlined version of Windows XP and I waited for 30 minutes for the internet browser to open before giving up and shuting down the computer and restarting it in XP (20 seconds) and online in 10 seconds

Very agrivating "alternative" system that is not easy to learn for a novice, not easy to install for a novice, and will not replace  MAC OS or even Windows XP for ease of use considering this is a optional system installed by someone that wants it on the computer and has more inkiling on how to use it then a experimenter like me and not preinstalled with all the kinks worked out and tweaks added.

If fact the Adios failed to boot the first time and crashed and had a MYsql? failure the second time with the 15 minutes to load and the Web browser trying to load for 30 minutes....pffft

But then again as a DOS user and Programer that used to make my own mini GUI Applications when Windows 1.0   and MAC OS came out way back when I felt the same way about the "Microsoft Mask & Shell" and the MAC OS when they first came out..lol (Who would ever want to be so "detached" from actual computing commands?)

Did you use nLite?

I was a late bloomer to the scene - pretty much got re interested in computers by helping with the BSOD in Windows ME....what fun.

I like the command line - really.

Re: Great way to testdrive Linux

you can also download an ubuntu live boot cd. It works very well, and it makes a great backup in case you can't get windows to boot for some reason. you can use it to surf the net and look for answers to why Windows won't boot:)

yes. Same with Sabayon and Ubuntu. They are all "Live Boot" and allow you to test drive.
