BLOCKING Trackers
Submitted by thegeek on December 22, 2006 - 6:41pm.
To find out how to BLOCK myspace trackers from tracking you, see this excellent page submitted by Meta:
That list is specific for myspace. To block a good portion of tracking/statistics/analysis on other sites go to this page and just click "Add ABP Tracking Filter". It's a good supplement to the GUG list. Re: BLOCKING Trackers

mmhmm- i have another question! so- i took the 4b. mixmap code out of my headline because i figure if someone scraped me, they'll see that i have a tracker. i posted that same 4b. mixmap code in my about me section and within the time frame of me doing that and going back to my myspace, 8 people had viewed my page but nothing registered on my map. i'm aware that only friends would be tracked if i remove the code from my headline. my question is: since i only really want to track the people who are my friends, should i be using a different code? my profile is set to private- so, is 4b. my only option? will 4b. only work in the headline? THANKS SO MUCH ps- something else i thought was weird- all of a sudden when i log into my myspace page, rather than it going to my home page it goes to my photos page- is that strange??? I just wanted to say that i LOVE gug! I thought I would try a tracker of my own- which hasn't tracked anyone yet. BUT....I honestly did search before posting...just so you don't get annoyed with the newb! My questions are: 1.) I am using mixmap as a tracker... Now, i'm new to all this tracker info and i did choose the 4b. option as i have a private profile. BUT, when i myspacescrape myself it shows that i have a tracker and lists it as mixmap. I know that this is because the code is in my headline (see! i DO read the old posts!lol.). Is it okay to post the 4b code in another section (like books under "interests")and still have the mixmap work? Or is there yet another code so that it doesn't show up when someone scrapes you? 2.) Can one get booted off of myspace if the tracker is found? Do they have people that search profiles for them? I only ask because I read a post in one of your forums about someone with a band profile supposedly getting kicked off of myspace for using a tracker. THANK YOU so much for this website and for your time. Geeks are the best. Re: BLOCKING Trackers

I just wanted to say that i LOVE gug! Because of you all i switched to Firefox w/adblock after suddenly this weekend my Norton went sick after clicking on some chick's profile. I thought I would try a tracker of my own- which hasn't tracked anyone yet. BUT....I honestly did search before posting...just so you don't get annoyed with the newb! My questions are: 1.) Welcome to GuG! Excellent first questions, by the way. You can put the code in another section, it should work just fine. Here's the differences... If your tracker is in your headline, you will get a few "false hits", people who didn't actually visit your page. This happens because your headline not only loads on your profile page, it shows up in search results as well. So, anyone who does a zip code search in your area, or for your graduating class, etc, will show up on your tracker even if they didn't click on your page. If your tracker is in your "About Me" section, it will only be able to track people who actually see your full profile, not just the "this page is set to private" page. So, you're only able to track your friends if you move it. However, it shouldn't show up on MySpacescrape if it's in your "About Me". Can one get booted off of myspace if the tracker is found? Do they have people that search profiles for them? I only ask because I read a post in one of your forums about someone with a band profile supposedly getting kicked off of myspace for using a tracker. Technically, yes, your profile can be deleted if you're caught with a tracker. However, MySpace doesn't go on tracker hunts, so the only way they would find out is if someone reports you for it.

This is my first time here to GUG. Ya'll are amazing! I've learned so much in the short time I've been here! But ah geez and all this time I thought trackers didn't work. I started wondering how much someone could find out about you when a guy contacted me on myspace.. and after several just friendly messages back and forth he said he already knew things about me. yikes. Maybe this is why? Creeped me out. Re: BLOCKING Trackers

Thanks for letting us know. They got three new domains, see the how to block page. They weren't on the list yet but they are now. Re: BLOCKING Trackers

So I'm using the tracker list, and I am still being tracked. Is it possible that for the trackers that people pay for, the AdBlock will not work? Or maybe we do not have the tracker on the tracker list. Somehow, this person knows I'm tracking them. I even did the "right-click" thingy on their profile to "View page source" to look through the notepad, and I did not see anything for trackers or odd websites. Do paid trackers not show up on these notepads? Thank you! Re: BLOCKING Trackers

If you imported the list that is on the thread then you should not be tracked at all. Yes it does block the paid trackers. I use a paid tracker (along with a couple of others) and I get alot more hits then I track. How does this person track you? Do you know what tracker they are using? You also said that you know that they know you are tracking them, well if they view your source code they yes they can see you have trackers. You can check to see if they have a tracker on some sites - run their myspace ID through it. But if you want to hit my myspace and then drop me a myspace PM then I can let you know if I tracked you. Please PM me with the time. Just click on my name and it will give you my myspace URL

When I visit their page, the adblock doesn't block anything on their page. Somehow this person knows when I get on their page or if I read their blog. What could it possibly be?
I usually hover over the adblock "stop sign" button at the top right of the page to see which trackers ive blocked. But i just realized the other day that i should be doing that and also be clicking on the adblock "stop sign" and then look through all the images in the adblock box that pops up to see what images are on the page so that I can see which ones have trackers in them. I guess thats something I had been overlooking this whole time. Ack! But, luckily most of the profiles I look at dont have trackers in them so I lucked out. btw anyone, am i correct about the way i do this? Please correct or suggest something, thx.

The red ones are the urls that are blocked. If you're using the filter list from gug to block trackers then when you see red urls they'll probably be trackers. What i meant was that i'm more interested to find new trackers on a profile than the ones i already know about. If there is a tracker that's not on the list yet it will be one of the black urls so that's what i spend most attention on. Re: BLOCKING Trackers

Makes sense . . . I went there prior to opening add-block to check it out . . . Thanks Bottlebob! How about some of the others such as extreme-dm.com and statcounter.com? I didn't visit these sites after I opened add-block. Extreme showed 20 hits, and stat showed 10 hits. Re: BLOCKING Trackers
December 12, 2007 - 11:42pm
A lot of them aren't exclusive to myspace. Extreme-dm is used on lots of regular websites, i don't even think it's used on myspace so maybe it shouldn't be on the list. I'm pretty sure statcounter is used sporadically on myspace and all over the place on the internet. Re: BLOCKING Trackers

If I'm NOT logged into my account and I click on a private profile will their tracker pick up my view? Also, how many people do you think use trackers??? I'm well aware that the individuals on GUG are using them, but how about the individuals that think trackers are a scam? Re: BLOCKING Trackers

Most, probably 99 percent, of trackers will grab your ip address regardless if you are logged in or not. Also, how many people do you think use trackers???
Alot more than you think. After adding a recent tracker to my filter list, i notice alot of the profiles i visit have that one. Thats why it is important to post new trackers here when you find them. btw, welcome to gug :)

You can't block with IE - you have to use Firefox. Besides the blockers Firefox is so much safer. Less viruses. You'll find that once you start using Firefox you'll fall in love with it and not go back. Firefox has so many cool addon's and you can really customize it to your liking. Also like Pat said ~ welcome to GUG. Yes you worded that perfect but even if you didn't you'll find that GUG is made up a great ppl always willing to help out.

Just make sure you follow the directions here and import the tracker list. They made the instructions easy to follow (with pictures). If you don't have the list imported then you can still be tracked. If you import it and want to make sure it's working then you can visit my myspace http://www.myspace.com/smartmomdebbie and then drop me a PM via myspace telling me who you are and when you viewed my profile and I'll let you know if I tracked you (I run a couple of trackers). I do it for alot of ppl so no biggie. OK so now I'm

The first two lines on the txt file are: (Adblock Plus 0.6.1.2 or higher required) [Adblock] but it's not supposed to add any of that to your adblock filters. Could you check if any of those other words are in your filters (higher/required/adblock)? Anyway, it's not associated with any tracker so it would be wise to delete it. It would block any url with "or" in it and that's a whole lot. |
