File System NTFS Question

File System NTFS Question

Okay in the section 'My Computer' I usually check how much space I have left on my computer.

Early this morning I noticed underneath the words 'Local Disk (C:)' was File System NTFS.

Underneath that is Free Space and Total Size.

Now what I really need to know is has 'File System NTFS' always been there or did I somehow change my computer without knowing it?

I have Windows XP if that helps and I was looking online and it said that it comes with Windows but I've never seen that before or if I have I just didn't notice so... someone please help me out. Thanks!

Re: File System NTFS Question

I have no idea if I was using FAT32 or not. Like I said if NTFS was always listed I didn't notice until today.

Do you know if NTFS is usually the one that runs with Windows XP? And what makes NTFS more secure than FAT32?

And thanks for answering!

Re: File System NTFS Question

FAT32 provides very little security. a user with access to a drive using FAT32 has access to the files on that drive.

NTFS allows the use of NTFS Permissions. it's much more difficult to implement, but folder and file access can be controlled individually, down to an an extreme degree if necessary. the down side of using NTFS Permissions is the chance for error and screwing up the system is greatly magnified.

Windows XP Professional supports file encryption.

what comes standard on Windows XP? which ever the installer decided to use.

also, NTFS allows you to control the amount of disk usage and supports file compression. FAT32 does not.

Re: File System NTFS Question

It means you are using NTFS instead of FAT32.

NTFS is more secure.

If you were using FAT32--you could convert to NTFS--but then theres no converting back to FAT32 if you wanted to--unless you use a partition utility (which could lead to an error).

You are ok.
