Facebook Suggestions..

I have recently noticed a lot of people in my suggestions box have absolutely no friends in common with me. Most of them are not even in the same state. This is really strange and It is not an email address thing. To sign up for facebook I created a brand new email address that nobody else has. Anyway my question is, is there a way to make yourself show up in other people's suggestions box? Like if I feel funny making the friend request but would like them to see me and see if they request me. I heard that if you search people, you may show up in their suggestions. There has to be some other way besides mutual friends and/or friend finder by email, because I have no clue how most of the people wound up in my box.
