I just found out that gmail has added a new setting to force gmail to always use a secure connection. Log in to your gmail account. In the top right corner click settings. Scroll to the bottom and click use https always. Now gmail will always use a secure connection. Oh and don't forget to save your changes.
The article I read said someone is planning on releasing a tool for hacking gmail to try to force gmail to use better security. Dang i would have just sent them an email or something but to each his own.

Thanks for the heads up p to the izzle
I was getting tired of adding the "s" in the address bar every time. Cool
Got to work today and signed into gmail notifier. I got a server error. Logged in through Firefox and had no problems. It appears to be incompatible with the gmail notifier. Just something to keep in mind. For me it might be enough to make me switch back for now until I find a better solution. I really like the notifier in stead of checking my email constantly.
edit:
Here's a patch from gmail.
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=9429
Unzip the package and then double click on the install one not the unistall one.
Click yes then click ok.
Close gmail notifier and then log back in. You will be all set and using https assuming you've enabled use https always. (see above).
I don't want to die without any scars.
thank ya much - I made my changes
