i didnt respond of course, but...no i dont have one to share and if i did it would be posted on the forum. so, consider this your response.

Ummmm....that's a little scary there pat! And needless to say, it has me concerned! Hubby-how would members get our email addresses from here? I know once you respond to the email that comes via the contact form, then you are releasing your address. But how on earth would someone from GUG be able to have direct access to our email accounts? This is worrisome for me!

 

Note: I edited this to include the original post I was replying to. It was apparently lost in the migration into this forum. Just thought it should be included, so it's clear how the question originated.

I think it is automatic through this website.  Not long ago I contacted a member and checked the "send me copy button".  That person then responded and it came through my email.

 

 

I've learned that whenever I decide something with kindness, I've usually made the right decision.

 Yes, when you respond, the response comes from your own email address. But when you send through the contact form, it's anonymous. Pat said it didn't come through his contact form, it came directly. Have you received an email through the contact form yet? They are obviously different when you receive one-far different from a regular email.

I was, in fact, immediately notified of my Pal's email addy.  I didn't know or expect it to happen, but it did.  I hope my Pal is ok with it.  They have mine too.

Hmm.. well that's no good is it? all someone has to do is click the "send me a copy" box and now they know your email address.

 I knew the answer to this question the moment I read it.  I always select Send Me A Copy and I check my email and there it is with email addy.

First time was when Chris emailed me.  Darn I thought.  But I figured it was something I had to live with, so I did and it hasn't caused me any problems.

 

 

If I was standing on a fish, I'd slip and fall......

 Ok I think I'm figuring this out now! When a member with a gug email addy mails you through the contact form it appears to have come from gug. When they don't have a gug email addy, then it comes appearing as though it's from their regular addy-but just has gug formatting in it. Am I getting it now?

Well now i'm just confused.

when someone sends you a message via the contact form, whatever address they have listed in their gug-account profile will show as the "from" address.

she was talking about when you used the GuG contact form to send email. it is anonymous.

Hubby, your site has always protected email addys.

Ive figured out who the sender of the email was to me....so everything is A-OK Smiling

note: cross-referencing is one of my best traits. the person was trying to be sneaky, but i always get to the bottom of situations that interest me Eye-wink

when you send via the contact form, the email address in your GuG profile is listed as the "from" address.. so if YOU send a message via the contact form to someone, they will see whatever email addy you have listed in your GuG profile.

i got all mixed up. Thanks for clarifying.

this person did email me directly without the GuG contact system.

And it turned out to help make some good changes.

no, you contacted them via GuG email, and asked GuG to send you a copy of your email via that button. The receipants email addy isnt available to you until they reply to your email.

**That doesnt give you their email address until they respond to your email address, trust me.

Hubbys site has always protected email addresses.

If you want to check it, send a GUG Pal an email and click "send me copy".  You will be provided the email addy they signed up here at GUG with, even if they do not respond to your email.

Sorry Pat, not correct.  I still have the first "send me copy" email (which I could forward to Hubby, if he wants).  Their email is listed.

OK I had to check this out so I pulled up a email that I sent to a member via the contact tab on their profile and one that I had checked the box to send me a copy. This is a copy of what I got (their email addy was not shown to me until they replied):

As you can see from the first email that I sent out via my contact tab & that I had a copy sent to me it DID NOT show me their email addy. However in the second email they sent me via my contact tab their email addy was shown to me (which it states that on your settings).

So as I see it if you send someone a email via your contact tab then YES they see your email addy. If you receive a email from another GUGie that they sent you via your contact tab they DO NOT see your email addy even if they have a copy sent to them. They only see your email addy if you reply to that email via your email that you received.

What you say makes sense Smartmom. This is what Jewels and i had always thought too, but after all the confusion last night i just really got more confused, in fact we all got confused.

 

to fully explain to anyone reading this, i got an email directly to my email address requesting a code (ugh) from a email address that i have never corresponded with whatsover. (and i have never posted my email here or anywhere.) 

They made up an email address with the name grownupgeek in it (i wont disclose the full address in the open). 

i posted my full theory in another post in this thread. They created another email address and directly emailed me without using the GuG contact form. (knowing my email address from their previous emails) Emails that i dont reply to. It just distracts me from my projects for new codes, etc.

And, after some cross referencing i have pinpointed who the idiot is.

case solved Smiling

oh i see now.

the issue here was that someone had my email address that i had NEVER corresponded with. Then within the posting, i started to get confused like i do when im trying to figure out a new code--LOL

i never emailed them at the email address they used to send me that code request. The email they sent me was not through GuG contact info.

They know my email address from previous correspondence. So they made up a new email address and emailed me directly since theyve emailed me before.

now my head hurts, sheeze.

Good job on getting this fixed :) 

btw, moonshooter--very moving story in that thread. Did you write that poem?

Members don't have access to your email via the site - period (unless you send someone a message via the contact form).

Either the address was posted in the open at some time, or he replied to a message sent via the contact form.

i didnt email them first, ive never corresponded with their email address.

i have never posted my email address on this site. It isnt posted anywhere.

 

theory:

its someone who is a member here and has corresponded with me in the past while they were using a different email address.

They created a new email addy (with the name grownupgeek in it--i wont say the exact address in the open)

They thought they would mask themselves by using a different email address.
