Hey all, I currently have a Lite- On SOHW-832S, I have NEVER had a single problem with it, however since it can only write at 8x, and it's virtually impossible to find DVD+r 8x, I have encountered this problem. Now, Some people have told me I need to upgrade my burner in order to get good resultsa and others have said that I can easily use 16x disc.

Any advice from you GUGees would be greatly appreciated. If I should replace, any suggestions on a not too expensive burner?

Re: DVD Burner

The rating on media is based on what the "safe" speed is to write on that disc. When you are setting up a burn you usually get to set the speed and if the default speed settings are higher than the disc rating you should lower it to at or below the rating on the disc.

If you do feel like you need a new burner to be able to use higher rated media, they are super cheap these days. A great inexpensive one is the Samsung SH-S182D/BEBE and costs about $30.

Re: DVD Burner

You can use any DVD+R because it will burn at 8x anyway.

Re: DVD Burner

.... if you have 2x media and an 8x drive, it will only only burn at 2x.... it will read or write at the lower of the two speeds. but there is no problem with running 16x media in an 8x drive, it's just it will burn at 8x instead of 16x. Really, no big deal. Does your drive do DVD-RAM?

Re: DVD Burner

Ok this came from Wikipedia on the explanation (better than me trying to explain but I do know what it is):

DVD-RAM

Currently there are three competing technologies for rewritable DVDs: DVD-RAM, DVD+RW and DVD-RW. DVD-RAM is considered a highly reliable format, as the discs have built-in error control and a defect management system. Therefore, DVD-RAM is perceived to be better than the other DVD technologies for traditional computer usage tasks such as general data storage, backup and archival, though the Mt. Rainier standard for DVD+RW somewhat lessens the DVD-RAM format's perceived advantage. Curiously, DVD-RAM has a larger presence in camcorders and set-top boxes than in computers, although the DVD-RAM's popularity in these devices can be explained by the fact that it is very easily written to and erased, which for example allows extensive in-camera editing.

The on-disc structure of DVD-RAMs is closely related to hard disk and floppy disk technology, as it stores data in concentric tracks. DVD-RAMs can be accessed just like a hard or floppy disk and usually without any special software. DVD-RWs and DVD+RWs, on the other hand, store data in one long spiral track and require special packet reading/writing software to read and write data discs. It is a common misconception that DVD-RAM uses magneto-optical (MO) technologies, since both DVD-RAM and MO have numerous rectangles on the disc surface. However, DVD-RAM is a pure phase change medium, similar to CD-RW or DVD-RW.
