April is National Donate Life month. I have been a registered organ donor since I was 16-yrs old and learned about the program in drivers ed. class. Of course it took my parents consent. However, when I turned 18 I knew it was still a program I believe strongly in. Just as I believe that everyone should vote. It is our right to do so and our right to decide. The number of people on the waiting list compared to the actual number of transplants that happen each year is staggering. Unsure about donating your organs to save lives? Don't let these ten myths confuse you.

Re: April Is National "Donate Life" Month

i'm crushed! while i still believe in saving lives by means of organ and/or tissue donation, another story hits our headlines this week. 4 get cancer from teen's donated organs. why all of the sudden are these stories making headlines? is it because april is national donate life month? or do these type of things happen everyday and the stories just don't make headlines or have the impact on us like they would during this particular month?

p to the izzle...you are our medical field source. what are your thoughts on this?

Re: April Is National "Donate Life" Month

Well, what I can say is that things get missed. Sometimes it's no ones fault. Sometimes it is some ones fault. There is a huge liability in practicing medicine. There is a lot of CYA and there's a lot of uncovered ass so to speak. The article says it is rare. I'm sure there is no coincidence to to the article's timing. Every one has an agenda and people love to play devils advocate. Certainly disease can be spread from organs, blood and what nots. There was a girl in Australia (I think) who became what every transplant doctor hopes for. She was young, teens I believe, she had an organ donated to her. Wait, I found the article. Here are snippets.

"Her new liver's blood stem cells then invaded her body's bone marrow to take over her entire immune system, meaning the teen no longer needs anti-rejection drugs."

"Brennan's body changed blood group from O negative to O positive when she became ill while on drugs to avoid rejection of the organ by her body's immune system."

http://www.reuters.com/article/scienceNews/idUSSYD90620080125

That's pretty freaking amazing. So I'm not shocked that there was an undiagnosed disease that could have been passed on. We did surgery on a guy for a very bad tumor called Merkel Cell Carcinoma.  It had been biopsied a month earlier by another doctor and showed a precanerous lesion called actinic keratosis. Well the biopsy was from the edge. Just in from that was Squamous Cell Carcinoma In Situ and then in the middle is the Merkel Cell. He was actually sent to us for another spot on his scalp. SO things get missed but it's not always some ones fault. That other doctor did do a biopsy. They just missed the bad part.

Proud to say that I have a beautiful red heart on my driver's license indicating that I am a donor.

I've always given blood (A neg) until the last few years.

And yes,  I've received cadaver parts too.......for my neck.  I was somewhat grossed out by the thought pre-surgery, but it meant my recovery time was reduced.

I'm grateful to the person who decided to give.

Re: April Is National "Donate Life" Month

I'm an organ donor!  If I don't need it anymore they are welcome to it!!!  The liver transplant list has grown tremendously since the HepC epidemic and they are sure it will only get increasingly longer over the next decade.

There is a cure for Hep C now. My dad went through the trials using interferon. It was hell but he has tested negative now for several years.

Re: April Is National "Donate Life" Month

I know there's a cure my mom was cured.  Then she got liver cancer as a direct result of having Hep C for some many years undetected.  She was Hep C free for about 6 years.  She died suddenly this past December from liver cancer.  The problem is people can have the Hep C for so long without even knowing.  Especially someone like her who could not of caught it any of the ways that are "common" so there was no reason to even check for it.

Re: April Is National "Donate Life" Month

Man, I am sorry about your loss. That must have been hard to battle those two so close together. The interferon was pretty hard on my dad and he's a pretty tough person. My dad's Hep C went undetected for a while as well. He's fairly tan (shaking my fist at him) so it was hard to tell that he was turning yellow. He was a longtime alcoholic. It definitely is an odd disease. We have people come in from time to time who have it and aren't getting the same treatment my dad got. He was just in the right doctor's office at the right time. Luckily the VA hospital he goes to sends people out for lots of these things instead of treating them at the VA.

I try to stay on him about doctors visits. This is a good reason for me to stay on him even harder.

Re: April Is National "Donate Life" Month

Yes please do stay on him.  My mom had a hard time during the interferon treatments.  But it worked so it was worth it.  It gave her 5 great years.  She really wanted 5 more when she had gotten sick over the holidays she went in for a radical surgery (the tumor was blocking her portal vein and was pushing its way into her heart).  but they opened her up found a really bad liver (worse then they thought) and closed her up and well that was it.

Re: April Is National "Donate Life" Month

i have the biggest goosebumps on my arms after reading your post tlp and yours too p to the izzle. nothing that has been in the press this past week re organ donor failure issues or any bad press the activists bring to the headlines has changed my view. i was so ticked when i read the 2 stories i posted earlier. while i'm sure this sort of thing does happen, leave it to the activists and journalists looking for a hot story to ruin it for those clinging on to life and hope.

i keep in mind that journalists are not doctors, at any capacity. and they, in conjunction with a news website or service, will do what they can with their stories or headlines to get hits and/or clicks. that's how they work. so moving forward, anything i read better be from a legitimate medical or science journal in order to have any credibility with me.

Re: April Is National "Donate Life" Month

I'm proud to say I a donor!  Take it - take it all.  I figure at that point I don't need it and if someone can save there loved one (mother, father, child.....) then I will be there for them.  I would like to think that if I or a loved one needed it that they could have the opportunity to have it.  I will also say that when I blew my knee out and had to have surgery a couple of years ago that I did receive some cadaver parts - yeah I know ewwwww sounding but Thank God they were there for me!

I was even tested as a live organ donar - bone marrow for a friend with cancer and I'm part of the bone marrow registry.

I'm a donor. Have been for years now. I talk to transplant patients all the time at work. They are alive because some one donated.

Re: April Is National "Donate Life" Month

yep. i have a signed card in my wallet specifying that i will donate all organs that can be used and an organ donor sticker on my license. i also filled out something online. i don't have any family left to notify (in case my wallet wasn't found on me for instance), but my close friends know how i feel about it.

at some point i'm going to make a living will and/or give power of attorney to someone for my healthcare since i don't have any family. i haven't done it yet because i'm not certain what i want done about certain things yet.  but when i do i will specify the organ donation in that too.

Re: April Is National "Donate Life" Month

There's too much research that people who have organs that belonged to someone else start to display characteristics of the donor... that freaks me out... I'm the only one like me... I'm gonna keep it that way... my organs come with me...

But on the other hand, I'll donate blood... O Neg here and the bank LOVES my blood.

Re: April Is National "Donate Life" Month

I guess I should have specified, that research doesn't mean anything has ever been proven... there just seeem to be too many coincidences for me to put that red heart on my DL...

I knew someone was gonna bring up the Jessica Alba movie... all those stories are a bit dramatized... never saw the movie, it's been done before too many times.... but the basic concept behind those movies came from real life...
