I am: What I yam

I know there are a lot of Windows lovers here, and also many others that use Windows based PC's simply because they did not know there was a choice to use anything else. So I would like to hear from all you Windows lovers just WHY you love Microsoft Windows, be it Windows 95, M.E., 2000, XP, Vista or even 3.1.

Here are a few of the things that i like and don't like about Windows and my Mac:

Windows:

  • I love that I can choose from tens of thousands of different programs of any type - even if I only need to use ONE of them
  • I love the extensive installation instructions that hopefully comes with all my new Windows software, explaining all the clicks and steps required to install it - and what to do if i start getting messages like "DLL Conflict" or "installation failed"
  • I love that I can go to Best Buy and choose from hundreds of different types or brands of Network cards, video cards, sound cards, modems, printers or anything else. Even IF the installation of whatever piece of hardware that I choose will always end up being a nightmare and I will almost always mysteriously end-up with 5 or 10 new trial programs or other programs installed on the computer that I did not know i needed.
  • I love that when I my Windows PC gets so slow after a few months that I have dozens of free AntiSpyware programs to choose from to hopefully help get it back to normal
  • I love that I can get a discount on Norton Antivirus if I purchase 2-years or more of protection at a time
  • I love that when Windows begins to mysteriously "lock up" or gives me those very helpful blue-screens that say something like Error 00x99Cb5, contact system administrator, I have thousands of different support websites that can help me figure out what the problem really is
  • I love that I hardly ever have to use the bult-in Windows help because in order to find any useful information, I have to already know what the problem is called or what the answer to the question is before the Windows Help search will know how to find it.
  • I love the 10-20 different "trial" programs that came pre-loaded and do almost what they are supposed to do, and for only $49.95 will do everything
  • I love that I get choose from the widest section of new computer-games possible - even if 80% of them will require me to upgrade my RAM, my video card or my entire PC if it's more than a year or two old

Mac (OS X):

  • I love that whatever programs I choose for my checkbook, word processing, etc, can be installed by pushing the CD into the drive and simply dragging and dropping the "install icon" an inch across the screen
  • I love that so far in using my now 1-year-old Mac, every program I have installed with that simple drag of one inch across my screen has installed flawlessly, the first time, EVERY time
  • I love that when I buy a new printer, external drive, scanner, etc, I just plug in the USB (or firewire) plug and... it works.. the first time.. every time..
  • I love that after using my Mac for over a year it is as fast today as it was the day that I bought it
  • I love that i don't need to worry about such silly things as Antivirus, antispyware, firewall software or antiTrojan software
  • I love that when my Windows PC crashes or gets infected with a virus or yet another new piece of spyware, i can turn on my Mac and KNOW with confidence that I can get on the internet to figure out what's wrong with it
  • I love that in the extremely rare event of a problem, or if I need help using a program, the built-in help actually HELPS me.
  • I love iTunes, iPhoto, iChat, iMovie, iDVD and the other fully-functional, award-winning programs that came on my Mac
  • I love that I have been able to find a program to do everything I ever did on my Windows PC - even though all the Windows "experts" told me that my Mac wont run any software at all.
  • I love that I can buy my child a Nintendo, xBox, Wii, or whatever the hot console of the month is so I dont have to worry about him getting his candy-sticky fingers all over my Mac
  • I hate that I cant run CATIA R14, or SolidWorks 3D designer without having to first install Bootcamp or Paralles

So how about you? I'm curious to know what you love about your Windows computer or your Mac..

Re: Apple MAC HACKED in 2 minutes

Uh huh.. nothing is hack-proof.. although as reported, that hole has already been closed..

Now chew on this for a moment:

  • approximate number of in-the-wild Windows Viruses: 1,000,000,000
  • approximate number of in-the-wild OS X (Mac) Viruses: ZERO
  • approximate number of in-the-wild Windows Spyware programs: 2,000,000,000
  • approximate number of in-the-wild OS X (Mac) Spyware programs: ZERO

it's just undeniable.. the AVERAGE Windows user will have their computer fouled by malware within hours/days of buying a new Windows PC.. The average Mac user simply has nothing to worry about..

Sure.. maybe, possibly, SOMEDAY that might change.. but for today, tomorrow, next week, and probably the next year, we just don't have to worry about it..

DENIAL isn't just a really long river....

...not to mention the fact that pc's are easy to come by. mac's require some coin. thus, there are simply not that many mac users because they are unattainable to most.

Re: Apple MAC HACKED in 2 minutes

Why perpetrate these unfounded rumors and misconceptions?

Apple Mac Mini: $599

yet THIS DELL costs $4,000

There are Macs for any budget.  Sure the absolute cheapest PC will be less expensive than the lowest priced Mac.. but if ALLLL you care about is the lowest price, just be sure to factor in your Antivirus costs and all the time and frustration that the AVERAGE user will be required to invest in a Windows PC.

Re: Do you LOVE your Windows PC ?

Macs have a great customer service. You can get help from the genius bar at the mac store, or chat online to a mac genius from Apple's website, along with the many video tutorials, and Apple and forum help and how to topics there. Also, if you have a Mac-savy friend, they can use screen sharing to fix a problem for you, instead of telling Grandma how she can do it over the phone. So whatever problems you Mac may have, help is always there.

Also, every time I have bought software for my Mac from the Apple store, it has been delivered the next day. I can place the order at 8:00 pm, and I know it will be here tomorrow. I was impressed the first time, and astounded the second!

Macs rule!

Re: Do you LOVE your Windows PC ?

I haven't tried yet, but don't programs like Parallels or VM Fusion allow you to run Windows and all Windows apps from your Mac and therefore giving you access to pretty much everything from both worlds?

Re: Do you LOVE your Windows PC ?

Yes, they will.. and even better, BootCamp which is FREE will allow you to dual-boot Windows or OSx which eliminates the virtualazation layer which might make Windows run slower when using Parallels or VMF.. Although, according to Leo Laporte, some software is actually faster running on a Mac with Parallels than it is on an equivalently configured PC..  I dont understand how or why, and i havnt seen/tried myself, but that's what he reports.

Re: Do you LOVE your Windows PC ?

Leo is wrong about that , its a basic issue with HAL and instruction set differential that makes apps run slower and thats not PC users opinion that is a hardware based fact that holds true for either a Mac or Pc user

and no that is not a dig on Mac's or bootcamp

Re: Do you LOVE your Windows PC ?

So, to put this simply, can using a program like Boot Camp, Parallels, or something similar, allow Mac can do anything a Windows PC can do without the spyware or viruses and headaches?

Re: Do you LOVE your Windows PC ?

 NO!

When running Windows either via Bootcamp or Paralles, the Windows installation is just as prone to virii, spyware and all other "features" of Windows - although any infection cannot 'spread' to your OSx.

The vulnerability lies in the OS that is being run (Windows or OSx), not in the hardware.

Re: Do you LOVE your Windows PC ?

 right -

Your Windows Bootcamp or Windows parallels install can be crawling with virii and or spyware, but all you have to do is close the Parallels window or reboot out of windows into OSX (if you're using Bootcamp) and go about getting everything done with your Mac/OSX stuff, blisfully unfettered or bothered with all those Windows "features"..

Re: Do you LOVE your Windows PC ?

Beat me to the punch Smartmom

  • I love that I can choose from tens of thousands of different programs of any type - even if I only need to use ONE of them

Main word in there is CHOOSE PC users can CHOOSE to run thousands of programs MAC users can CHOOSE to run hundreds (hundreds is probably an overstatement)

  • I love the extensive installation instructions that hopefully comes with all my new Windows software, explaining all the clicks and steps required to install it - and what to do if i start getting messages like "DLL Conflict" or "installation failed"

Yes sometimes installs fail for whatever reason, so it makes alot of sense to instead of trying it again run out and spend 2K on a MAC, how lazy do you really have to be that this is a reason to buy a MAC?

  • I love that I can go to Best Buy and choose from hundreds of different types or brands of Network cards, video cards, sound cards, modems, printers or anything else. Even IF the installation of whatever piece of hardware that I choose will always end up being a nightmare and I will almost always mysteriously end-up with 5 or 10 new trial programs or other programs installed on the computer that I did not know i needed.

Yes its much better to buy a Mac and only have one overpriced choice, and its not a nightmare to install new hardware if you actually read the directions, and if you are reading you can see a check box for NO I DO NOT WANT TO INSTALL THE YAHOO TOOLBAR or whatever extra software is in the driver CD remember reading is fundamental  (about time that school house rock BS paid off)

  • I love that when I my Windows PC gets so slow after a few months that I have dozens of free AntiSpyware programs to choose from to hopefully help get it back to normal

Here is where you hate to look at the fact that a small market share is the only protection a Mac user has, the Mac operating system isn't fantastic its the fact that no malware or virus writers will waste there time trying to get the info of 3% of computer users, but hey lets feed the Mac kool aid to everyone so they may hit 5% someday and get there very own virus's

  • I love that I can get a discount on Norton Antivirus if I purchase 2-years or more of protection at a time

Read Above

  • I love that when Windows begins to mysteriously "lock up" or gives me those very helpful blue-screens that say something like Error 00x99Cb5, contact system administrator, I have thousands of different support websites that can help me figure out what the problem really is

Vs the hundreds of support sites for Mac users, oh I forgot Mac users never have any problems right? Cause it wouldn't be a Mac if you ever needed help

  • I love that I hardly ever have to use the bult-in Windows help because in order to find any useful information, I have to already know what the problem is called or what the answer to the question is before the Windows Help search will know how to find it

Thats only a problem if you can't describe a problem to help, but if you can't do that google is probably useless also

  • I love the 10-20 different "trial" programs that came pre-loaded and do almost what they are supposed to do, and for only $49.95 will do everything

Really simple way to fix this its called add-remove programs and if you build your own PC its not even an issue

  • I love that I get choose from the widest section of new computer-games possible - even if 80% of them will require me to upgrade my RAM, my video card or my entire PC if it's more than a year or two old

Yes its better to get a MAC and never have the option to play the game unless you load up boot camp so you can use the software in a windows enviroment, and I wouldn't want to upgrade my RAM either if I was a Mac user since they charge 700$ to upgrade from 2-4 GB

OK now lets expand on price,

dual core 2GHz,2GB Ram,500GB HD,16x DVD/VD burner with lightscribe, 20in LCD price 699.98

dual core 2GHz, 1GB Ram, 250GB HD,  8x double layer Superdrive, ATI 2400XT 128MB 20IN LCD 1199.00

OK so its not fair the MAC got a video card along with 1/2 the RAM and 1/2 the HD space  ( I could have upgraded those items but that drives the Mac price up another 300$and it starts looking like I am making these figures up like the PC/Mac commercials)

So from a person who has owned both PC's and a Mac or two, I say if you are incredibly lazy, have more money than sense, and never want to do anything but edit photos and load up your over priced Ipod  rush out to the stores and drink the kool aid but please you can keep the elitist Mac is better BS to yourselves

Re: Do you LOVE your Windows PC ?

I LOVE my pc because I can get ANY program and use it on my pc without having to wait for the Mac version. I don't have to take out a morgage to get a pc

and lets compare (I tried to find the closest in comparison):

I can get ONE of these for $2999.00 (that includes the slower RAM and a lower end vid card)

Specifications
spacer.gif
  • 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme
  • 4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x2GB
  • 500GB Serial ATA Drive
  • SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
  • Apple Mighty Mouse
  • Apple Keyboard (English) + Mac OS X
  • Accessory kit
  • ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory
  • 24-inch glossy widescreen LCD
  • AirPort Extreme
  • Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR

OR I could get TWO of these - OR one of these with a 45" plasma (hell use it as a huge monitor) plus have money left over to get the sticky kids a x-box for about the same price:

* NZXT Nemesis Elite Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

* Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 Dual-Core Processor

* OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM
* GeForce 8800GTS XXX 320MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
* SAMSUNG SpinPoint T Series HD501LJ 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

* GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard

So I dunno...I know you love your Mac hubby but I don't think I will ever earn the little mac badge. I just can't drink from the Mac Kool Aid pitcher.

But I do still love ya and love thegeek Kiss

Oh but I do love the Mac users...they let me see all of their token string for myspace on my tracker - only mac users.....hummmm security loop hole? Surprised

Re: Do you LOVE your Windows PC ?

Yes, good points - the fully loaded ones can get expensive, but you could also get one of these Macs for only $599, or one these Macs, with a built-in 20inch, widescreen HD monitor, 1GB RAM (this aint Windows, 1gb is fine for the normal use), 250GB hard disk, built-in Wireless & bluetooth, and of course the built-in dual-layer, dual format DVD Burner/CDR for only $1199..

My semi-fully loaded 24" iMac was ~$2,000 when i bought it.. Not cheap by any measure - but never having to worry about that damn spyware, viruses and all those other Windows "features" has made it worth it for me..

I dont think i've ever mentioned that up until about 2 years ago, I was a fire-and brimstone Apple hater and Windows preacher - for the previous 15 years or so, going all the way back to MS-DOS 4.0 and Windows 2.0. I used to tell everybody that "real" PC's had Windows (or DOS), and only idiots that werent smart enough to use a 'real computer' used Macs. And to be honest, back then the Macs really were trash... but since OSX, that's all changed..

So one day as I was updating my antispyware software, and feverishly trying to download a Windows hotfix to patch yet another Windows vulnerability, i really thought about how much time i was wasting on making sure i had the latest antivirus, antispyware, antiTrojan, firewall, blah, blahh blahhhh, blahhhhhh... and then it hit me... Who's the idiot? Me, spending all my time trying to stay ahead of all these problems (or trying to fix the aftermath), or the Mac users sitting there smugly using their computers? It was then that i decided that i wanted to use my computer, and stop fighting with it.. and another Mac user was born...

Dont worry all you PC/Windows lovers.. I say a prayer to Steve for you at every boot-up.. Tongue out

But Hubby, protection for a PC is only half the fun!  I'm a PC man because I CAN BUILD 'EM exactly how I want 'em;  I'm limited only by my imagination and budget!

Re: Do you LOVE your Windows PC ?

Smartmom,

Why don't you link the 3.06 speed Penryn mac with the 3.06 speed PC....

hummm

Intel released an Apple only chip on April 28, 2008 that increased the clockspeed to 3.06 GHz as well as increasing the Front Side Bus to 1066 MHz, and changed the Cache to 6 MB shared L2.
