Does anybody know of any free shareware or a program that can convert .m4p (songs purchased through iTunes) to another format such as .mp3 or .wav? I know this is simply a protection for the songs purchased there. But I think once I buy it, I should have some flexibility with it like a CD... right? I dloaded Tunebite from CNET, but it would only convert the first minute of a song. I really just want to convert one song, so if some shareware is out there that could let me convert only a handful of songs, then that's fine too. I'm not looking to convert a whole library or anything. Thanks.

Re: Converting iTunes Purchases

p - That didn't work for me, but I found another way to get around it. I changed the Burn setting to audio CD instead of MP3. This gave me a disc of .CDA files. Then I used my free program called Switch and converted these .CDA files to MP3. Easy enough. The initial burn to MP3 instead of Audio CD was hanging me up and probably why your method wasn't working for me either. I knew I could do in the past, but I forgot how. Of course, I didn't know if the iTunes updates over time eliminated the ability to do that. Thanks again p. I've noticed that the few times I've asked for help, you've been one of the first to reply.

You should burn the disc as the same file type as you bought. In other words just burn the cd as mp4. The magic happens when you rip it back into iTunes.  That's where you let iTunes do the dirty work of converting it. I do normally delete the mp4 files after I rip it back into iTunes AND make sure they sound good. If it fails you still have the backup cd. I do this method for all the stuff I buy from iTunes.

I'm guessing that the problem was from trying to burn it to mp3.

if you Google 'm4p to mp3 freeware'  something useful should show up.

Re: Converting iTunes Purchases

Burn the songs to a cd. That will give you a back up and it will set us up for step two. Under preferences and then under importing set it to import as mp3 and set your quality at whatever you prefer. Rip the cd back into iTunes. It will be in MP3 format and free of those pesky DRM problems.

Re: Converting iTunes Purchases

When I burn them onto CD, the songs are in .m4p format. I went under the preferences, importing, and chose mp3. Now - Do I delete the songs from my library first, then import them again? I went straight into importing them, but since they are already in my library, it doesn't seem to do anything. Thanks.

Burning them to a CD in audio format (not data) will make them in .m4p format? I would think burning it as an audio cd would burn it in an audio CD format, where you can just rip the songs off of it as mp3s.

EDIT: Whoops, should've read the bottom posts first *whacks forehead*
