Think they are allowing this to boost interest? I don't know how it can help anyone actually sing better but it can create a more marketable image and we all know votes for favorites are based on popularity and not necessarily vocal skills. Example: David Cook probably would have been shown the door weeks ago if it were just him, his hair in his eyes, and a mic (without Les Paul and Marshall). Don't get me wrong - actually, I think he and Brooke might be the most marketable and musically talented of the bunch.
Contestants with instruments - Good or bad?
OK... by this time last year, I had already picked Sparks as ther winner. Here's the problem this year - there don't seem to be any winners.
David Cook is beginning to get creepy. And WTF was he thinking trying to play a talk box guitar mini-solo and then admitting to buying the damn thing and learning to work it the day before? That was a really weird thing to do. He's an OK guitarist but he's not Peter Frikkin Frampton. It takes a bit of practice to be able to say "Sweet Emotion" on a talk box.
I think that allowing instruments was a bad idea.
Here's what seems to be happening... those with great musical talent and less stage presence are able to hide in their comfort levels behind instruments. This is fine, but Idol is supposed to be a singing contest.
There's a good arguement of an unfair advantage that an accomplished pianist may have over a straight singer. I guess you could argue it both ways but by allowing instruments, sooner or later some fool is going to come out and do a trombone solo and then my Idol-watching days will be over. When Chikezie did his awkward harmonica exhale/inhale, my hands went instinctly to my face.
And did you see my cutie Brooke White twirling around the stage like she was on mushrooms? *cringes* Oh please, please... shackle her ankles and put her back behind the baby grand. Haha!!
Maybe instruments can even out the advantage that someone with exceptionally good looks has over someone who is less attractive but still with a great voice. We know that all else being equal, the cute one wil get the votes - we've seen it on Idol time after time.
So stick a guitar in front of a guy that's less than cute and it knocks him up a few notches in the attractiveness dept. Or so I've been told... ;)
you know people are raving about how great David Cooke is at the guitar, but he definitely isn't. I remember seeing him play Dm for four measures during the bridge in "everything I do", when the chords are A# major, Eb major, A# major and F major, But that would require him to play barre chords which he can't do.
Jason "stink hair" Castro is a much better guitarist, he just doesn't love himself as much as David Cooke.
The singing acctually has to go with the music and i dont care what anyone says not all people can sing....It really is a talent that not anyone can learn. Alot of bands that have been comeing out recently cant play music what so ever. The singer may be good but if you look up what they're playing on guitar its pretty much the same stuff repeated over and over or changed slightly.. I think if you're trying to form a band and you cant really play you're insturment then either find a new intrest or you have to have a good singer or you dont have a band.
I like instruments....
I think any singer that doesn't either play an instrument, or write songs, needs to go away... anyone can sing, it doesn't take a whole lot of effort unless your tone deaf... so I take it back, any tone deaf people who made a career of singing is okay in my book. Singing comes naturally, playing instruments or writing good songs requires neurons...
But I agree, it's stupid on american idol... they need to take their business to star search or whatever... american idol is for singers.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.
