Hello. I need anyone's help.

Yesterday my laptop froze up and I had to shut it down. When I went to restart the computer it would try to start up but couldn't. I briefly received the blue screen of death, but the computer shut down so quickly afterwards I couldn't see what the message was. I was finally able to stop the computer from starting automatically and was given an error "Stop C000221 Bad image checksum. Uswer 32.dll is possibly corrupt. The header check sum does not match the computed check sum."

After checking the MS website I was told that I only needed to replace the 32.dll file from MS XP operating disk. I was never given one of these disks. I was only given recovery disks (which I know contained MS XP). when I inserted the disks I only wanted to restore the system without changing the HD partitions. I CANNOT lose any files that are on that computer. After I tried to restore the computer I saw a message saying "Creating CRC file/drive." Then at the end, the computer gave me an error message saying "recovery error...turn off computer."  I now can't get the computer to start. I just keep getting a black screen. I can, however, get to the boot menu.

What I really want to know is if there's any way to hook the laptop up to my desktop and move the files I need to the desktop even though the laptop is off. I don't really have the money to take the computer in to a shop to get looked at. I would really like to just connect an ethernet cable to the laptop and just move the files. I was wondering if that's possible? Once I move the files then I can just restore the entire system (HD and all).

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Computer won't start

ouch i had a problem similar to this way back then but it was with win 98 it is a bad hdd they do die eventually and sadly it always happens at the wrong time a new hard drive can be picked up on places like ebay but id recogmend tigerdirect.com and newegg.com ...... newegg is the best in my opinion theyre quick too so you will have youre drive in just a couple daysi wish you luck with setting it back up its annoying but it happens sometimes

you can try booting off of a temporary device like a porto hard drive or heck i think an ipod might even work if you put the os on it or you can get a linux cd to use for basic stuff in the meantime

good luck

You can't do a network transfer but you can indeed just hook it up to another computer and get the files that way. Has anybody tried creating a boot disc with the dll file on it? Does anybody think that will work?

Your hard drive is dead via the System files and Restore areas themselves being in the bad areas and thus "corrupted" beyong saving.

You will likely be able to use the Hard Drive in a Storage/data recovery capasity via a Disk enclosere but the laptop will need a new hard drive and the System re-installed.

Re: Computer won't start

you probably won't be able to just hoke up the laptop to the desktop and transfer the files. What you can probably do though is remove the hard drive from the laptop and either place it in a friends laptop or buy an adopter so that it will work in your desktop. You'll have to find out what the interface of desktops motherboard is and what the interface of your laptops hard drive is; but popular options for the desktop are 3.5/5.25 inch ATA and SATA, for the laptop popular interfaces are 2.5 inch ATA and SATA. Most likely the desktop is 3.5/5.25 inch ATA and the laptop is SATA. Though I'm only confident, and not absolutely certain, that the SATA used for laptops and desktops are the same size.

Re: Computer won't start

Another option would be to get a USB hard drive enclosure kit.  You can find them pretty inexpensive on ebay. It's just a case that the hard drive slides into, and you can connect it to another pc via usb.  I did this when my Dell Optiplex died and I needed to transfer files from it.

What kind of recovery did you attempt?  Was it from a certain backup date, or was it a full system recovery, because it is possible that your files may no longer be there, although there is no way to know for sure until you look at it.

For future reference, you can usually download missing dll files off the internet if you don't have the Windows setup CD.  I have done this in the past without any problem. The only other option I can think of at this point would be to go to your laptop's manufacturer website and see if you can order a recovery cd, as it sounds like your recovery partition is toast. This won't save your data, but it might make your laptop functional again...

Good Luck!
