Computer shuts down after 5-7 minutes

Computer shuts down after 5-7 minutes

Hello everyone,

I just built a new computer and I'm tryin to install windows xp. so heres the process ....I start the computer and run the windows cd right after when it formats and copy all the files to the hard drive and it has to restart....when it restarts ....after like 30-50 sec. it just shuts down automatic. Firt I thought it might be the thermal paste so I went and bought new thermal paste and put that on there....but its still doing the same thing. what you guys think what could be the problem.....( somebody told me it might be the BIOS setting that are turing the computer off) please help thanks in advance.

here are the stuff that i put in that computer:-

Motherboard- XFX nForce 780i SLI
Processer - Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600
RAMS - 2x 2 GB 240 PINS
Hard Drive - 2x 500 GB SATA

You've probably already checked this but have you checked the fans and the temperature on your PC? Usually a PC shutting down on its own is a faulty PSU, incorrect BIOS settings or the PC temperature is rising too fast because the fans are having issues.

Try running the PC with the case fully open so that you can see the fans and eliminate part of the heat factor.

Re: Computer shuts down after 5-7 minutes

so what was the problem? Im having the same problem with my xfx 780i :S except my pc shuts down after 1 min after turning on.

Re: Computer shuts down after 5-7 minutes

well, if it is the power supply; setting the BIOS so that your computer boots upon power being restored *might* be able to give you a positive identificantion.

my best guess on this is, if the computer shutsdown then reboots when you have the BIOS set to boot upon power being restored but not when you have it set as such then it is deffinately the PSU. If it reboots either way, it's deffinately not (just) the PSU. and if it doesn't boot either way it doesn't confirm or deny anything other then if it does turn out to be the PSU that this method doesn't work for finding a bad PSU.

I hope that was adiquitely wordy without actually being helpful!

Re: Computer shuts down after 5-7 minutes

I also suspect a faulty or inadequate power supply.

Re: Computer shuts down after 5-7 minutes

could try to remove one of the hard drives so theres less drain on the PSU and see if you get any farther... And are you sure the operating system your trying to install is compatible with the MB? 64 vs. 32 bit...

I recently had a friend come to me with a similar problem, he was trying to put the old Windows XP Pro. on a new laptop that came stock with Vista, And it just wouldnt take it... The laptop was 64 bit and XP was not...

Re: Computer shuts down after 5-7 minutes

laptop I'm on right now is 64 b CPU, OS is 32 b..... don't think 64 b OS will run on 32 b CPU but 32 b OS will deffinately run on 64 b CPU....

Re: Computer shuts down after 5-7 minutes

If you have an extra PSU, try switching it out for a known-good one or check the output voltage. It sounds like a PSU problem to me.

Re: Computer shuts down after 5-7 minutes

in the BIOS, make sure that the hard drive "C" is set up as a boot device.

it is

go into BIOS and reload the default settings. or, if it has a reset jumper, use that to clear the BIOS.
