Cell phone help

Has anyone else ever had "Service Required" on the face of their cell phone? Mine was running fine all day, I went to dinner and put it in my purse and a half an hour later "Service Required" was on the banner (front and the inside screen) on top of my wallpaper. I called Verizon and they tried to walk me thru some things but said that they would have to have an engineer look into my account and it will take 48-72 hours. I have no local store in my town, but I said I would drive to one and the guy said it wouldn't matter.

Before anyone asks- Yes I am paid in full on the account so it has nothing to do with being late, and no the phone did not get wet or damp in any manner. I keep my lotion and other liquid type things in my purse in a zip lock bag.

It's just really frustrating. I use the phone for business as well and for my own use so it's going to be bad for me tomorrow. This is the fourth phone I've had in the past year, they have all been the same model and the same piece kept breaking off of them. They said the next time it broke they would give me any phone I wanted for free...which is nice, but still a complete pain in the a** when I have to drive an hour to have the problem taken care of. Any help would be appreciated.
