Cannot install WMP11

When I try to upgrade my desktop computer to Windows Media Player 11 I get an error that says the installation cannot be completed. It runs through the validation and begins the installation. When the installation looks to be finished, I get the error message. Clicking the web help button gives me error code C00D2AFB and no information is available at the windows help site. I currently have WMP9. I also tried to install version 10 but I cannot do that either. I had no problems upgrading my laptop, and I need to have version 10 or higher to sync my MP3 player. Anyone have any ideas for me?

wmp 11

Hmm... Do you have windows SP2? I do know for a fact that the only wmp11 version that would install was the beta version unless you had installed the sp2 on windows... and the beta version isn't available anymore (well, I haven't looked for it)... you could always run a search for the beta version if you like... maybe that would work on your computer. I updated mine and saw no difference between the two.

Yup, I have SP2. I also have all of the latest necessary updates from Microsoft. Think I should try to find the Beta version anyway?

RE: wmp

No. I never had issues with the beta version... everything was great until I formatted my desktop and went to reinstall the new nonbeta version... although the nonbeta version works fine on my laptop... but my desktop is a bit out-dated... that's why I recommended searching for the beta.

Well, the beta version

Well, the beta version didn't work either. It was worth a try though. I did find a page on the microsoft knowledge center that suggested I check the permissions for administrators, but I haven't been able to find that on my pc yet.

ok

OK. I was already nosing around, and found BlockUninstall at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer is set to yes. Should I set that to no and uninstall the player altogether, then try the install again?

still no WMP11

Thanks for the advice foambrush, but I uninstalled wmp11 runtime, Quicktime, and RealPlayer, then tried again with no luck. The actual message says "It was impossible to complete Setup. For more assistance, click Web Help." But Web Help is not very helpful on this. As for monkeying around with the registry Geek, that is something I have never done before. But I will give it a try.

re: WMP11 and your registry

no no no!
If you are not familiar with the registry or how to edit it I would suggest that you do not go near it. One wrong move with the registry can break your Windows!

Might also be a registry issue

If Foambrush's advice does not help, it could be a permissions problem in the registry on this key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB911565

Are you familiar with monkeying-around in the Registry?
