I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question, but someone told me that you can buy new IP addresses? How can you do that? Thanks!

Re: Can you buy new IP addresses?

No.....I wasn't wanting to buy one, but a friend of mine told me that she saw that on "computer geeks" and I'm not a professional, I've taken classes in college in IT Tech and computer language (C+), but when I heard that, I wondered to myself "how could that be done?" because each computer has their own.

Thank you for the great answers!!

Re: Can you buy new IP addresses?

Do you mean the IP address that identifies your computer at any given point in time? The one that web pages like this will show you?

http://www.coolgenerators.com/ip_address_generator.html

This number is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). If you have a static IP address (most DSL and cable accounts), you might be able to get it changed by calling them.

I take it that you don't want to be identified when you visit a page(s) or identified by your email headers. There are probably websites out there that act as "gateways" and will mask yout IP address or replace your real one with a false one but I don't know much about those.

If you're trying to hide illegal Internet activity, assume that you will not be able to hide from the FBI and stop what you are doing. Smiling If you're concerned about MySpace trackers, Firefox has a couple of plugins that are supposed to hide your identity from trackers like some people use on MySpace.

Re: Can you buy new IP addresses?

... you can just as easily use the hosts file as you can use Firefox.... and, if you want to hide your activitys from the Feds just use Tor.....

Re: Can you buy new IP addresses?

You can purchase a dedicated server package from a hosting company, which includes a static IP- so I guess in that instance, you are purchasing a new IP (but its only the IP for your own domain. )

Re: Can you buy new IP addresses?

Yeah, no matter where you go or what spammers get you to try and buy, the IP is gonna be the same on every computer. Even one's at Kinko's or the libraries. They can all be traced back to the location if need be.
