So I was thinking...hmm...is that such a bad thing. I have 9 piercings and 4 tattoos now. I plan on getting at least 5 more tattoos and about 5 to 8 more piercings. She freaks everytime I get a new one. She doesn't know about a few of them...Thank goodness for clothes. I was just wondering what everyone thought about piercings and tattoos if they are done tastefully?
My mom called me a freak...

I <3 tattoo's. I'm even a huge fan of a sleeve (on a guy. but hey if a girl wants one, that's cool too)...
Mine are "hidden" and I do have plans for a couple more (also hidden). I think it's entirely up to the individual how many tattoo's they get, and where. *I* also think that the opinion that people are freaks for wanting/having them is narrow-minded. I'd never consider someone a freak for not liking them...we're all made differently for a reason.
I do, however, agree that it's def something to consider if you want certain (or most) jobs...it's sad but true that appearances matter substantially, no matter how strong the candidate.
What are tasteful tattoos and piercings
My Mom freaked out when I just had my one tattoo. I think everyone has their opinions about them (some are tolerant, some love them, some really hate them). I love tattoos in a small amount--I don't care for them if they take up your whole arm, your whole back, etc. But that's just me, and if a person can take it, then go for it!
May I ask--where do you have your 9 tattoos?
I only have 4 tattoos at the moment. I have one on my lower left back, one on my front right thigh and a small one on each shoulder. Tastefull tattoos are ones that really visible under normal clothes and if they are they aren't offensive to the general population.
Sorry, I meant 9 piercings. Typing too quickly and didn't check my work! Sorry about that
My friend has tattoos of stars all over her body. It's kinda funny because she coaches swim for kids and she has a tattoo on her thigh as well and the kid asked, "How come you have a star tattoo there?" I laughed when I heard that.
I dont have any tatts and have only pierced my ears (single piercing in each ear) but ever since I was 15, I lived for the moments my mom would disapprove of something I wore or chose to do. LOL..not to be impudent, but because that is when I began to realize that I really do have choices.
So do what makes you happy. She is a mom and is entitled to her opinion, but you are a grown woman and answer to yourself.
That's very true, she is entitled to her opinion. Sometimes I wish she wouldn't be so harsh about it though...ya know?
My mother actually encouraged me to have tattoos when I was a teenager. Her Dad and her brother had them and she thought they were really cool.. I wish now i'd not listened to her and that my full Japanese tattoed body suit was on someone elses skin rather than mine. It's great to express yourself in creative ways - but there's a cost. Tats limit options - and although we can all kick off about people shouldn't judge others on what they wear or how they appear, but the reality is they do.. So - kiss goodbye to a lot of public face types of jobs, the military in some places, the police, office work etc etc..
I can understand that, as far as people not getting hired because of tattoos or piercings, but I don't agree with it. I've met some people with a lot of talent and great degrees that didn't get jobs simply because of tattoos, or weight, or another issue that really shouldn't matter....
Fact o'da matter is, some employers may not want their company represented by tongue piercings and tattoos.. right or wrong, this is the world in which we live. If you want to be successful, sometimes you gotta play the game..

I can understand that, but what about a phone job..where the only person to actually see the people on the phone is their boss...as in never seen by the public?
What is your plan? To work hidden from the public for your entire life?
anyway.. I guess it depends on how much the boss hates tattoos and tongue piercings.. actually, for a phone job a tongue piercing may not 'sound' good.. but the point is - if the boss, rightly or wrongly, thinks he does not want "the type" of people with tattoos, he/she will hire someone else plain and simple.. and i can tell you by experience in the 'business world', many bosses/HR people WILL pass.. again.. it may not be right.. it may not be 'fair'.. it's just the way it is..
But like I said I can take both of them out, I'm just speaking for people I know, all of my tattoos are hidden, I planned them that way. I don't plan to stay hidden..lol..I plan to find a company as free thinking as me
and i think there should be more of them!
I agree. While I dont have any (visible) tattoos, the company i work for now (which happens to be a HUGE health field corporation) DOES allow tattos and piercings, though they ask facial piercings be kept 'to a minimum' and no 'offensive wording that encites hate or cant be heard on daytime television' which I think is a pretty good rule!
My old job though, no tattoos or more than one earring per ear (also in the health field, but a lil more hands on with patients) so I think it just depends. Im glad some employers (at least in california) are becoming more lenient- though thats not to say its common. It is refreshing though.

Just know that things come and go out of style constantly. The tattoo that is popular today, will one day not be so cool. It's one thing to change your hair or your clothing, but tats are permanent and won't look so good when you're 50 and your skin is sagging.
Be sure that's what you really want to do.
My tattoos are all expressions of things I believe in or things that have happened in my life...I don't think my beliefs or memories will "go out of style" anytime soon...but thank you for your opinion.
lipstick doesnt look that great on sometimes when people get older but women still wear it. so i agree with doing it for you. my mom was very disapproving of my latest piercing (im sure my dad was too but he didnt even bother giving me the look)but she loves me for me so.....

I do not think a lady can have9 piercings and 4 tattoos and call it tastefull.
No one ever said I was a Lady
. In all honesty I am not rude or hatefull and I do have manners but I'm sure a lot of things I do aren't "lady like".
Hey everyone has their own opinions and some people don't find it to be distasteful. I say if it makes you happy and doesn't hurt someone else - then effing go for it!
It's a form of SELF expression. So long as you're comfortable and happy with what you do to YOUR body, I wouldn't worry about what anyone else thinks. Remember ... you can't please everyone all of the time. However, I would be wary of where and what kind of tattoos I get. Some employers will look unfavorably on "loud" visible tattoos. BTW, I have 4 piercings and one tattoo, with plans for at least one more tattoo.

I only have one piercing other than my ears that show...and none of my tattoos show unless I'm in a swim suit...I can wear a t-shirt and shorts and you'd never see them....I always think about what employers would think if they happened to see a tattoo. My eyebrow ring is small and tastefull....and I guess you'd see my tongue ring if I was talking too much, which I tend to do, but I do take it out for interviews and ask if they have a piercing policy.....
I love love love love them. I dont even care if theyre tasteful
So you think I'm hot now? lmao!
