13/10/2009 Well today is the first full day that the chickens have lived here. Delivered yesterday by a "Chicken Chauffer" in a large van bearing the logo "Omelet" , all four hens have settled in well. The first night was a little tricky though - they had to be shown how to climb the ladder and roost in the special "Egglu". I was knee deep in wood chippings gently showing them where they had to go - the hardest part of which being my effort to extract myself from the long wire run once this was done. So - eggs? Not yet... these are what are called point-of-lay hens - not long out of chicken babyhood... if there is such a thing.. so watch this space and I'll update as soon as the first eggs arrive! Meanwhile the two "Ginger Rangers" and the two "Miss Pepperpots" are safe in the Egglu for the night...

I had chickens growing up...they were "free range". They went all over the yard and ate flowers and pooped EVERYWHERE. I don't really think they were "messy" because the poo always got washed away by the rain...which I lived in Kansas so it didn't really rain a lot...but... So yeah. I guess chickens can be messy. My mom had them where she lives now in a small pen and it was about 6 months ago when she got rid of all of them and she spent most of the summer trying to get the grass to grow back where their pen was....
I want to get chickens after we move, but Boyfriend is dead set against it, said they're noisy and filthy. How dirty can chickens really be, considering I'm looking to raise Alpacas and Angora rabbits? I think they'll just add to the fun of having a farm.
How do you keep them warm in the cold weather?

chickens are dirty. especially if you have them confined to a coup imo. maybe if you let them wander around a good hunk of land itd be easier. depending on how you look at it you could have a scattered mess over an acre (for example) or a big mess confined to one place for a good hose down. but we had alot of feed everwhere with them which led to rats which led to snakes which led to cats if you didnt keep up with cleaning them. not to mention all their waste. in the winter we had a heater for them i think and extra mulch stuff in the pen.
we had chickens once. one thought she was a lap dog/chicken. good luck!
