ok who do you think has the best lived show? I've heard alot of bands that sound good on the album, but sound like a bad bar room band live.

I myself am partial to rock and metal, so thats most of the shows i've been too.

Clutch, is a must see if you into them, they tour constantly, and are 150% from start to finish.

chimara is effin awsome, they really get the crowd into it and tear it up..

but i must say the best live show i've seen is NIN downward spiral tour. trent is amazing, a beat and lyric genious in my opininon. i saw them again last year on the tour for, with teeth. once again i was not disapointed, im only rating it after the first NIN show i saw because it was at an amphitheater and .the first time was a little club the size of the norva, small clubs are always better to me.

Re: best live show?

i was never the hugest fan, but my husband was...so i got us some VERY expensive tickets to see U2 for his christmas present.

some of the best money i ever spent (well my husband's money..HAHA).

it's gonna sound cheesy...but you are there, and the feeling in the crowd is electric, like you are in the presence of greatness....it even sounds cheesy as i'm typing, but it really is the best way to describe it. i am a huge fan now, and before, if their song was on the radio...9/10 i'd change the station.

i also like that they have a wonderful message, and try to educate their fans on meaningful causes during their show.

also, MADONNA, BABY. that's pure entertainment right there.

and nirvana...one of the best shows i've ever been to. too bad i was seeing triple most of the time...i regret that part now.

and honorable mention...MR. BUNGLE...mike patton's other band besides faith no more. that show is ike a freaking barnum and bailey circus...awesomeness.

Re: best live show?

A lot of people seem to like metal/rock on here, so I don't know how relevant my suggestion would be...

But the Arcade Fire have so much energy live, and there are at least nine of them sweating and banging away on various instruments. It's really energizing, and the special thing about them is that they're such a big ensemble for a 'rock band' - it's also great to watch them shouting and harmonizing together, because you don't often see that, either.

I'd also recommend the Decemberists if you're into folkish rock; I'm sure a lot of people have heard of them at least in passing. They're a lot of fun to see live - they've got accordions and hand-painted drum sets, I believe - and the singer is adorable. The concerts are worth it just for Colin Meloy, folks.

Also, Bjork. But this is only applicable if you really like her music. Then it's like a dream come true. I actually paid upwards of $250 to see her live this December, eep.

Finally, I've heard Kanye West's concerts are amazing, and that he spends half his life planning them. Thing is, he comes off as a petty brat - complaining publicly when critics don't give him spectacular reviews. Regardless, I hear they're good! Light shows and glow in the dark thingies. In fact, I think it's called the Glow in the Dark tour.

ok i just saw the police a couple weeks ago.  they were cool.  it was neat to see sting up close.  he kept a table on stage near by with what looked like mists or sprays for his throat to sing,...but i chuckled to myself and called it his karma sutra table!  the drummer was the best too!

Re: best live show?

can't believe i missed the music thread for this long!

okay, best live shows i've seen:

Pink Floyd Division Bell (too young to have seen them before Sad but they were amazing! i was right up front and center, it was incredible)

Janes Addiction & Porno for Pyros (obviously different tours...)

Sick of It All (old school stage pile on's, i miss these shows the most, i saw them everytime they came to town)

Slayer (they were perfection the drummer is incredible)

Patty Griffin (her voice is phenomenal as well as her guitarist)

Kiss reunion tour--those guys were great performers! i didn't even like them before I went, it was an agreement w/ my bfriend but i loved it!)

David Grey (again, perfect voice, great connection with his audience)

Andrew Bird on tour this year, he was just the opening act, but I could have listened to him for hours and hours

I did see Clutch many times and loved their shows too

Re: best live show?

i saw p.o.d. open for primus a couple years back. metallica sounds just like the albums, i saw u2 this last tour and they were great. i actually went to a motley crue concert this last tour and was blown away, their such rock stars. i saw nin a few monthes ago and they were really good, really great sound. i got tickets to see the police in feb. so that should be cool.

i really wish i could or could have seen: deftones, ratm, pantera(r.i.p. dime), slipknot, buckethead...

Blueman Group in Las Vegas.

No way they will sound like a "bar Band" live, and the rhythmic drum beating knocked the wax right out of my ears.....literally,...lol

If you don't know who they are, they were doing the Pentium 4 commercials a while back, they dress in black, there heads and hands are painted blue, and their show is a cross between art and music and most of the bits are "audience interactive/participation"

Another question... has anyone seen Bowling for Soup live? It seems kinda bland if they're just going to sit in front of their microphones the whole time... Just wondering if it's worth skipping my 3 hour evening class on the 18th (I only get to skip one of those before they start screwing with my grade)

I saw NIN with the Jim Rose Circus and PWEI many years ago. I won tickets on my 18th birthday from the local radio station. Anyhow, I've been to a lot of shows. I thought I'd chime in with some of the more memorable ones I've seen:

The Cure
The Ramones
ACDC
Social Distortion
Nirvana
Sex Pistols
Dinosaur Jr
Paul Westerberg
Urge Overkill

Re: best live show?

I saw KISS in 1976 whan I was 15.  It was my all-time #1.  This was before "stadium seating" and I was pressed right against the stage board directly between Paul and Ace.  Still the best show in my memory.

2nd best for me was one I saw of Def Leppard in the 80's.  That was their in-the-round stage show before Steve Clark died and right after Rick came back from losing his arm.

In my 45 years, I have seen a good number of shows (could not possibly list or remember) but those two really stand out.

HAHA...I saw Kiss in 1975 in Denver, and then again like 20 or 25 years later when they did the makeup reunion tour again...damn near identical shows.   Both rocked though.

Hmmm....my favorite show of all time, damn thats tough.  I've seen hundreds...if not thousands of performances of various types, and I have a hard time picking just one.    Might be one of the Doc Martin performances I've seen....

Re: best live show?

OK so I know I'm going to date myself with this one but the best show I've ever went to was Cher.  The costumes were great, the set was great and the music was awesome.  That was a true show - not just standing in front of a microphone (in some nasty outfit that looked like it came out of the dirty laundry) screaming like you get with so many of today's bands.  Yeah I do miss some of the music from the 80's.

I saw Def Leppard shortly after Rick came back, and it was absolutely AMAZING to watch.  It was the in-the-round stage, can't remember for the life of me if it was Madison Square garden or Brendan Byrne arena, since I knew guys who worked security in both of them.  Anyway, when my sister and I got there, we ran into one of my security guard friends, and he bumped our seats up.  We wound up in the area that traditionally would have been behind the stage, but with the round, spinning thing, "behind" didn't exist.  We were in the 2nd row, but since it was what would have been the back of a normal stage, we were raised up to stage level.  WAY better view of the stage than you could have gotten with floor seats.  To watch him banging away on those drums, one armed and barefoot, was just cool to watch.  And then it hit me, "wait, he's playing an older tune, and he sounds just like he did last time I saw them in concert, when he had 2 arms."  I was quite impressed.

We must have seen the same tour. Goose bumps covered me when Joe announced "The return of Rick Allen the Thunder God" and Rick did that awesome solo while his drum kit rotated around. Loved the gym shorts and t-shirt! And the full sound from those electronic drums was amazing.

On a sadder note, I saw Def L the next time they were in Lexington and this was pretty soon after Steve Clark died. Vivian Campbell had just joined.

I was bummed pretty much the whole show.

There's a few bands I just won't go to see because they've replaced someone due to a death or fighting, or whatever stupid crap rock stars get their panties in a bunch over.  Have you seen the new guy singing lead for Journey?  They cloned Steve Perry, it's frightening!

Re: best live show?

Lucero was the most fun I think I ever had at a show. The first time I saw them was insane. People packed into a small club. They played every song I wanted to hear. Unfortunately, if you haven't seen them it's too late. They play slightly larger venues now which equals less intimate. Also they take themselves and their music a little more serious. It's never too late to like their old stuff though. If you like alt country it's untouchable.

I am saying Disturbed. I am not a HUGE fan of them but like the music. I have seen Shinedown, Seether, Greenday (which is a close second), and many many more.... but Disturbed was awsome, and Dave was good about making the concert more fun and "personal".... I think he was into more than some of the people that went to see it.

I have to go with Metallica. It may be the lame answer, but I've seen them twice and was happy about it both times. You pay a lot of money for it, but they play a decently long show. And they've been doing it for a while now, they know how to sound good and make the crowd satisfied.

Pink Floyd was visually entertaining but my seat was crappy.

I've passed up some good concerts cause I just don't feel into it anymore. I'm too old and lazy I guess.

Re: best live show?

I like the "new" Metallica. (their new style that arose a few years back) Does that make sense? Maybe the word I'm looking for is that they seem more industrial. (st.anger is what gives that thought.) I've never been to their concert tho, and rarely hear their music. But out of curiousity, do you know if have new band members, writers, etc that may have brought on this new style

Re: best live show?

St. Anger definetly has a different sound to it, even compared to the albums directly preceding it. I like it a lot. The only new member in the band is bassist Robert Trujillo, formerly playing for Ozzy and before that, Suicidal Tendencies. As far as I know (I could get up and check, but i think I'm right) their producer has been Bob Rock for a while now, and he played bass for the recording of St. Anger while they were looking for a replacement for Jason Newstead, who quit to pursue his own thing.

So while there is an awesome new member, he couldn't have had that much to do with the "new sound", cause he wasn't there yet. I think they changed styles slightly just cause they wanted to. Sounding the way they want to sound without giving in to the masses or trends has always been one of Metallica's best traits...

I really, truly wish I could agree with you, but I was nothing but disappointed by live Metallica.  It was the Black Album tour, my 18th b-day, and it was quite possibly one of the most boring concerts I've ever been to.   It was such a let-down.  It was like they had no energy, they didn't jam on anything, they just played everything like it sounded on the album.

Just my opinion, but I was bummed.

Re: best live show?

Sorry bout your Metallica let down. Both times I saw them were also on that 2-3 year long Black album tour.

I have a special spot for the first time I saw them cause it was my first concert. And like a dumb 15 year old, I had some big guy throw me in the air so I could "crowdsurf". I got thrown over the fencing onto the cold concrete floor between the floor and stage, and yanked up by my arm around my back by a huge security guy, who said "DON'T DO THAT AGAIN!" and pointed me to the way back to the floor. And this was before the concert even started... we all had a good time.

Second time was better, it was outside, and there was some cool opening acts: Suicidal Tendencies (and now the ST bassist is in Metallica- neat) Candlebox, and Fight- some Rob Halford band he tried to do after Judas Priest. Alice in Chains was supposed to be there, but Layne Staley couldn't stay off smack long enough to do a full tour... anyways, during the Candlebox set, they let around 200 or so people into a walled-off area closer to the stage, so my friends, the future-wife, and I got to see Metallica and Candlebox from about 12 feet away.

Re: best live show?

oh and i can't forget Dying Breed, ok maybe im a little partial cuz my good friend was their bassist, but they do have an awsome live show.

worst i saw was linkin park, they just were lagging, and didn't seen to give a f*c&, as soon as the last note was hit they were out of there.

Re: best live show?

I'm never completely blown away by live shows but i like the whole experience. Some good ones from the past years were melt banana, sunn 0))), don caballero and lightning bolt. Sunn 0))) came close to physically blowing us away, if you've seen them you know why. Dragonforce disappointed me a little when i saw them last year but they were still alright. The keyboard solo alone is worth going.

Re: best live show?

I saw Gwar years ago. It's a really entertaining show. Their music leaves a little to be desired but the music isn't the point. Nothing like being covered in blood.

Gwar. Never saw them, but I did see their ill-fated copycat band, Green Jello. They opened for Testament. It was cool to see a big foam Barney Rubble jump into the crowd. And I think the Cow-God's eyes lit up... That was like 15 years ago...

Re: best live show?

Iron Maiden was the best sounding band I've seen live. I hear Dragonforce is very tight live. One of the worst was Aus Rotten, punk band. They were so drunk and couldn't hit a note to save their lives.

Country Music

I also like country music (along with rock) - are you into Alan Jackson?  I know I'll regret saying this but my hubby and son goes fishing with him from time to time (were good friends with his private boat captain).  If you are drop me a email via my myspace and I'll email you over a scan copy of his autograph picture

Re: Country Music

WOW!  How sweet are you?!!

I'm not actually a fan of Alan Jackson (there are a few songs I like of his, though) but I thank you for the offer!

That's pretty neat that they go fishin' with him!

I attended the ACM's a few years ago in Vegas and that was an awesome time!   People were everywhere (country singers, rock and roll entertainers, sports figures, etc) at the pre-parties, post-parties, and just hangin' out at the bars and not getting mobbed!

Re: best live show?

Best live show, Buddy Guy, Dave Matthews, Blues Traveler, Godsmack, Disturbed, and finally a show I saw in Vegas that was more pure fun than anything else Tom Jones.

*If you want to see some great live shows check out  Bonnaroo its a 3 day music fest I go to every year and it is always great
