i am having my second child and was wondering what other parents (or grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc0 feel is great to have or can't do without. obviously there are some essentials (a baby swing, butt paste, and boppy -this is my second=) ) but this being number two, hands will be full, maybe there are things out there that are better or that i dont know about.

it can be clothes, foods, toys, books, nursery, anything....

so what baby items do you have to have?

Re: Baby Necessities

Cloth Diapers. I wouldn't procreate without them. I used them on my daughter until the only diaper in town kooked out on me. He had at one point billed me for months than my daughter was alive. I had to show him the birth certificate to prove he over charged me. She had not one case of diaper rash while using cloth diapers. Switched to disposable diapers and BAM! she gets diaper rash. Ok it was more sublte than that but you get the point.

I won't be using pacifiers ever agian. I took my daughter's pacifier away at an early age but her maternal grand parents did not. They also over extended her use of sippy cups. These two items create a habit in the tounge that creates a lisp. Now my daughter has a lisp. Luckily my sister is a speech pathologist. She had given her some tips before on fixing it and now she is conscious of her lisp and is trying to fix it.

I don't want to die without any scars.

Re: Baby Necessities

I loved the naval wrap, but be careful regarding the quarter~ I have a friend who did this, and the quarter actually caused the baby's cord to become infected. We think it was because the quarter might not have been totally sterilized. Is there a way to fully sterilize a quarter? Not sure, but careful none the less. My favorite thing were the disposable waterproof pads. You can use them anywhere!

Re: Baby Necessities

There is a small pocket (quarter sized) in the middle of the wrap, I don't know how the baby got infected unless they didn't wash the wrap.

I know my friend washed the wrap~ we think that when her son urinated during a nap and his diaper leaked is when the wrap & quarter got wet, therefore making the wet wrap with the enclosed quarter contact the vulnerable umb. cord.

Re: Baby Necessities

Then it wasn't the quarter's fault, a simple wash of the quarter with antibacterial soap should do the trick. I was going to say the wrap got wet from urine or milk but even that's not enough to infect the umbilical cord. I remember how much I had to apply alcohol to the stump, it could of been that. Anyway it's a product I recommend highly.

Re: Baby Necessities

Ivory Snow laundry detergent

Cold cabbage leaves for you if you are not planning to breast feed. The cabbage dries up the milk, you should know where to place them.

A naval wrap for the baby, they sell them in certain ethnic stores. You put a quarter in the middle of the wrap and tie it around the baby's tummy to prevent an outie.

Baby sling.

CONGRATS!

Re: Baby Necessities

The cabbage has a certain chemical in it that dries up breast milk. After my first born they gave me a pill that dried it up but two years later they discontinued the medication because it gave lactating women heart attacks. Cabbage is an old wives tell that actually works and I swear by it.
