I'm just curious to see how many people have finished their taxes yet.

I have not done mine yet. Or my sons. Or my daughters. Or my son-in-laws.

My husband reminds me each week that April 15th is getting closer and closer. And this started the end of January.

I haven't done mine yet because I just don't want to. I do this every year. I always put it off to the last minute. My hubby wants the money as he already has plans for it. All of it. It may well be that's why I haven't done them yet.

When I do it for free, I just don't want to do it.

Woo Hoo is right. I'm still on cloud 9 knowing that I got everything done and I didn't have to file any extensions for anyone this year.

I used Turbo Tax again.......and this year, it went smoothly. Last year, Turbo Tax hiccuped on April 15th and refused to e-file for a lot of people.

that happened to me last year. i had to print it out and mail it last minute instead of filing online. this year i used easy1040. so glad to be done! and i'll be even happier once that stimulus check arrives!!!

Okay, I have finished e-filing all the returns for this year!

One complaint to file with Turbo Tax on charging for a state return e-filed. The first one is free and all others afterwards cost dollars. Turbo tax charged for all of them. I wonder how much fun this will be.

I am trying to finish up a couple of returns by tomorrow. They are pretty much done, but I like to review the next day. Tomorrow I'll file them electronically.

I would like to say that I am unhappy about not being able to deduct ALL the rent and expenses we have paid all year for our son to attend college in another part of the state.

Paying our own home mortgage/living expenses plus his rent/living expenses plus helping our daughter as she needs it makes for .........lol (I just couldn't think of the right words to put here so I won't).

To top off my unhappiness, my son couldn't claim the Economic Stim. Pkg. Payment because we claim him on our tax return and we cannot get any credit for the Economic Stim Pkg Pmt for him because he isn't under the age of 17.

Stress level? Mine went pretty high today as it usually does this time of year, but then I took some time off and went and commented on every picture of a myspace friend. I'm ALL better now.

Lmao. I was so CRAZY after going through tax publications that I decided I needed the break badly, and well, your pictures, put thoughts in my head, so you got the first ones that popped up.

Taxes are serious business and Lynnie just can't be serious all day long. By the time I got done I almost felt sorry for you having to approve all those comments, but I didn't, lol.

the minute i recieved my husbands w-2, (which was sometime at the end of February), i did our taxes...i have a habit of leaving things to the last minute as well and knowing that i try to do all my important stuff first so i have time to play!!

I did mine, but the IRS won't give them back, lol. They say I never filed in 2004 (I was in Iraq), and I need to. The funny part is they owe me for 2004, so I am filing now, but I am amazed the governement is actually helping me get money from them

It's good to hear positive news about the IRS jjbova. Here's to hoping it all gets resolved quickly.

I know that my experiences with the IRS these past two years have been pretty good. They made claims that I didn't file all my income, and when proved wrong, they were quick to step up and say, "Okay, it's all good now". Well, not in those words, but you know what I mean.

Yesterday, I am happy to report, I did my daughters taxes. I also used the free file and used Taxact.com and was very happy with it. It files the federal return for you for free, but I believe they want to charge you $12.95 to file your state tax.

While using Taxact.com for free e-filing, you need to input all the information from your W-2. You also input all of your state tax information and at the top right corner of the page, you will see the amount of your federal tax refund and below that, you will see the state tax refund they have figured for you.

I did not file her state return through them, will do that on paper and mail it in, but I noted the amount that they came up with to use in comparison.

It was quite painless. One thing to note though, you should have your previous years return on hand as you might need some information from it.

Now, only 3 more returns to complete.

HI LynnH,

I'm glad you used taxact.com and liked it. I was wondering if you would try it. I'm glad you gave it your stamp of approval so others will be willing to try it, too.

Like I said, I paid the extra, but it was worth it to me to get the tax advice prompts and for a couple more bucks, I just did my state taxes with them, too.

Congratulations, in advance, for getting those last three done. :)

I do mine myself every year ASAP: 1040A, schd A, daycare form 2441, charity 8283. I had all my phone records and was able to take a credit of $170 on the excise tax thing. I had $28800 in deductions (mainly mortgage interest, local and real estate taxes) - largest itemized deduction figure I have ever had.

The phone thing sailed through just fine.

Hi crystal,

I did see your post and thought it was great you shared how you take care of your taxes. Knowing that you have used taxact.com and have had no problems is great information for others. Thank you for that.

As far as a chore, yes, you hit that one right. I used H.R. for 2 years and was not happy with their services. Prior to that we used an accountant, but our taxes have simplified so I feel comfortable doing our own.

We are in a very tough spot financially ( as are many others, I know), and i just get crazy thinking the IRS is coming after us, instead of a multi millionaire who is getting over any way he can. Oh, juliek, no, no, no, you did not come off that way at all. I'm kinda on your side here, I really do not like paying taxes. I know the tough spot of finances very well, yes, very well, have been there and trying not to get in that spot again.

I know what you mean about the IRS not going after the millionaires, but guess what I just read yesterday. They are in fact, starting to go after people who make more than 100,000 annually now. The reason behind that is that they know they have a better chance of collecting from people with lots of money. Course, that doesn't mean they wouldn't come after people like me and you, they will, if they want to.

I too, always worry about getting that letter from the IRS. I got one last year and it took me DAYS to open that letter, because I know what those letters mean. (from my work) I did finally open it, and it was not good news, it was bad, it said I didn't report all my income and they penalized me and added interest on top to boot.

It turned out, they were wrong, not me.

And I got another letter this year, but it turned out to be that they just wanted to thank me for ordering forms from them. It was no big deal, but my heart skipped a beat or two and it only took me ONE day to open this letter. lol

I think if I sounded upset in any posting it was to Miss Anime and I didn't mean to. I wasn't upset with her, I AM CURRENTLY very upset with employers who pocket the tax money of their employees. I don't want Anime getting screwed later on in life when she needs to collect Social Security.

As far as me calling the ladies Miss. That is something I do which shows respect and that I appreciate them. (If you thought differently...???)

Back to your situation, its possible (a question) that they haven't bothered you with anything else, because they know that the only means they have to collect from you is social security. Let me do some checking for you and see what I can find.

UPDATED FOR JULIEK: Be sure they are only taking 'up to 15%'. With some reading I just finished, I found where there have been cases that the IRS has taken more than 15%. The IRS website does state that they will only levy up to 15%. If you need to discuss your case at all, you can click here for more info.

I haven't done taxes since 1986, and this is the God's honest truth. Of course the IRS did the taxes for '86 and '87, and now we owe $22,000, and counting. I contacted a guy named Steve Kassel last year, and because of my health he made all kinds of promises. So we gave him POA for the taxes. When I try to contact him, I get no response. So, the IRS has since levied us, but because we have nothing of any value,and them being the money grubbing thieves that this government consists of, they take an ungodly amount of $ from my husband's social security. I'm not sure if we should be filing now or not, but to make a long answer short...no, I have not done my taxes yet. I believe that it is illegal and immoral to tax citizens that are not represented in any branch of government. I didn't vote for any of these nitwits! julie

Since you granted them Power of Attorney, I really am wondering what the IRS had to say about that. I believe, though, that even though you have granted someone else POA, the IRS is still probably going to make you responsible in the end. It sucks, I know. I hate paying taxes, but I do it. And I curse along the way.

As far as filing now or not as you stated, did the IRS agent tell you that you should be or not?

I really hate having to garnish someone's paycheck because of a levy. It is totally not fun bookwork, especially the part where I have to tell them what is going on. It's embarrassing to them and to me (for them).

But hey... I have a question...

I worked as a bartender at a small bar from June-October 2006... I was paid with personal checks... and the taxes were hand written on small yellow pieces of paper (some sorta small form..)

No W2 or W4 or whatever...

Fast forward to this month...so I call them up to see if I can get my tax information... I don't even know what form I'm supposed to fill out....

Here's the great thing... the people who owned it, don't own it anymore....... I can't get ahold of them.... now what?

You won't like what I have to say. They should have mailed you your W-2. They are now in non-compliance with the IRS.

Regardless if they own the business anymore or not, it is their responsibility to give you that information. And it is your responsibility to report your income. However, since you do not have a paystub, (I would have looked at the very last paystub of the 2006 year), you'll have to go another route.

I'm pretty sure I made a post about what to do, however, my brain is just not here at the moment, so I'll have to look for it.

I really want you to contact the number I'm going to get for you. It is best, to talk to the IRS and ask for this info, instead of assuming the prior owner might not turn that information in like they are supposed to. You could really get bit in the butt, and you don't have that much butt to lose! lol

What To Do If You Did Not Receive Your W-2 Or You Lost It

All W-2's should have been mailed/postmarked to you by January 31, 2007. If you did not receive your W-2, then you should contact your employer. It is possible that your W-2 was returned to them due to an incorrect address. Your employer can issue you a 'reissued statement'. They can also charge for this service.

If you do not receive your W-2 by February 14, 2007, you should contact the IRS (1-800-829-1040). Be prepared to offer them the following information of the name and address of your employer, along with your name, address and social security number.

You are still required to file your return on time even if you do not receive a W-2. Attach Form 4852, Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement with your return. Any refund due you will be delayed until the information you provided is verified by the IRS and your employer.

Should you receive a W-2C (Corrected Copy of W-2) and you have already filed your return, you will need to file an amended return 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

Okay... well one more question before I go and give out names I shouldn't be... the people who payed me, I'm pretty sure they didn't truly own it... But I don't think I ever came in contact or met the person who did. So is it the people that ran it that payed me (the name on my paycheck) that I'm supposed to inform them of? Or am I out of luck if I have no way of finding who the real owner of the property was?

You are going to need the name of the establishment that you worked at AND the name on the checks that you received for your services. Address, phone numbers, your SSN. That should be it.

Let me know how it plays out. This may be interesting.

Hey, this mountain is doing me just fine and I thank you for it.

EDITED TO ADD: I need to let you know that there are many people who can sign a business's checks. Managers, bookkeepers, if they are given the authority. Also, you need to know that there are many crooked people out there. I just fired a crooked client. They were showing on the employee paychecks that they were paying the taxes for the employees, but they WEREN'T.

Here is the IMPORTANT part. If these people pocketed the money that should have gone to taxes, and they DO NOT file, YOU will suffer in the long run. Not reporting this income to the IRS means that come social security time for you, you won't be able to collect as much because your income will be less.

Don't think for a minute that this is not a big deal. Add all these little amounts up over a lifetime and it will ADD up.

And, as a sidenote, I don't want to talk about how Social Security probably won't be around. It is for now. None of us can second guess that scenario.

Lol, I never took part of that 'it won't be around when I'm old' debate... because frankly, I don't care... I hope to make enough money to not need to worry about it... but that's in the distant future so who knows...

As for the people I worked for, it wasn't business checks, they were personal... but they offered to pay me under the table... I didn't take that offer because I was looking for a place to live and needed proof of employment... now with all this stuff, I almost wish I had taken them up on it... because this is more trouble than it's worth really...

My only real reason for trying as hard as I am, is for school... blah...

Guess I better go find what my boss's last name was...

Lol about the ss issue I made, I just put that out there on the table, because I can't or don't want to debate that one either. And, I was thinking about a past client messing with their employees, it upset me all over again. (Shouldn't do that, I know)

I know lots of people do under the table stuff. You are so young, and one never knows what the future may bring, I was just wanting to look out for you a little bit. Since it was personal checks I wonder if they will file anything or report earnings under your ss number. Still concerns me that they kept part of your paycheck and probably didn't send it in, which means, it won't count towards your life earnings. But things like that happen.

Good luck either way. If you can't find a name, you can't find a name, I say.

Hmm... would you suggest I attempt to try a little harder to find them? I mean, say I do... should I see if they're going to file? If not, should I still?

I didn't make a whole lot via paycheck there anyway, so I'm not really worried about that going toward my 'life earnings' It would just tick me off that I got cheated outta money lol... oh well...

So should I just call up that 800 number and give them the info and do what they say?
