Just wanted to convey that even though you have till midnight to postmark and mail your 2006 Tax Return, not all post offices will be open till midnight.

Our post offices are actually closing at 10:30 pm which was just announced today. So be sure to find out how long your local post office will be open if you are filing a paper return. Our post office is closing at that time, so they will have time to postmark all of the returns.

Also, for those that are using the E-Free File for your federal return, and do not wish to pay the extra fee (usually $12.95) for filing your state tax return......log onto your state website page and do a search for e-file or state tax return. I just did that with mine and I can file the state return online through e-file for FREE! I'm processing 3 returns right now and just saved everyone the $12.95 that taxact wanted to charge them.

Good luck with your taxes today. Should you be unable to finish your taxes on time, be sure to file for an extension. But if you owe money, you still must send it in, (doesn't make sense to me~~how are you going to know what to send in if you haven't finished figuring them yet?).

If you are expecting a refund, and you are still hunting down some receipts to increase your refund amount, by all means, file for the extension.

Re: April 17th Tax Return ~ Extensions

As far as filing for extensions....first year I've actually done this for anyone.

What I did learn is that through Turbo Tax if you are expecting a refund, it will take the info you have entered, but it still asks you to type in how much of a refund you are expecting.  It is necessary for the extension paperwork.  Kind of smart of Turbo Tax to lay the burden on you, the taxpayer.

When you file for the extension, you must 'approximate' what your refund due or dollar amount you will owe will be, which is included in the paperwork.

Bad thing about my Turbo Tax, it wouldn't file online, but TaxAct would.

Re: April 17th Tax Return ~ Postmark Deadline Alert

 Hi,

Looks like I missed the boat on your question.  A lot of last minute 'help me's' came in yesterday and I didn't make it back here.  I filed many extensions for people yesterday, which let the pressure off of them.  They now have until Oct to get their paperwork together and file.

But, I'm hoping that since you replied to this post mentioning 'Filing for an Extension', that means that you filed for an extension if you didn't figure out what to do.

Let me know what you did yesterday and we'll take it from there.  If you prefer email, that is fine, I'll keep an eye out for that too.  I will be in and out today, doing some computer maintenance for some people.

Lynn

Re: April 17th Tax Return ~ Postmark Deadline Alert

I went to do a renewal fafsa and just put in that i "will not file" and then it just asked me my general income and that seems to have pleased the FAFSA gods... so I guess I didn't have to file after all... if the IRS shows up at my door, I'll just poke them with a stick until they leave.
