I wasn't sure where to place this. I click on links in my google search but the links all get redirected to Advertisements. You know the ones...like pop-ups. I have no idea why. I ran my scanners and cleared my cache & cookies. If I copy and paste the original links address I get there fine. Could someone clue me in? Hope I explained well.

UPDATE: It is a virus. Zlob.DnsChanger. Spybot picked it up and I cannot get rid of it. I delete it and I have fixed the changes in HJT. I have searched everywhere and no one gives a clear cut explanation on how to get rid of this bad guy! Could someone help me please?! I keep getting viruses. I have all the several scanners and I run them separately. I read that I need a 3rd party firewall. Could that help?

Re: Sites Redirecting to Advertisement, Not to Needed Page

Well you can make anything a hyperlink - that is how email scams are done.  They think they click on one thing but really it's another.   Here is a example:

http://hotgeeks.com/  <--- I hyperlinked it to here (grownupgeek.com)

However if you hover your mouse over it you will see it will not take you to hotgeeks.com (not sure if that is a real site).  Hover over it and look down below and you should see where it will really direct you too.   Do you every run anything like Spybot search and destroy?  It's a free download and can help with this type of crap.    Good luck

how do you rename/shorten a hyperlink?  like how typing Firefox automatically creates a hyperlink on this site.  thanks.

Re: Sites Redirecting to Advertisement, Not to Needed Page

to do a hyperlink here you first have to type in the website or the word you want to link. It can be anything or any word like this (<-- I hyperlinked that to this site). Then you need to highlight the word (drag your mouse over it so it is highlighted) then click on the chain above

Once you click on that a pop up box will appear. Add the hyperlink to "Link URL" click insert and woo la you created a hyperlink here.

Now with that said please don't go hyperlink crazy here - to many hyperlinks can affect how google rates us here at grownupgeek. Now if you do hyperlink something I did forget to add in the "target" area of the pop up click on the right to it and change it to "Open link to a new window".

Now the chain link is to create a hyperlink and the broken chain is to remove a hyperlink (like if you were to copy and paste in my name "smartmom" it would already have a hyperlink attached to it).

Re: Sites Redirecting to Advertisement, Not to Needed Page

if your able to google the exact name of the threat, you should be able to pull up detailed instructions on removal. you could also contact your antivirus software and request a solution.

when your scanner finds the threat, does it provide a location path?  you can use regedit to trace the exact path and manually erase it.  also you could use search to see if you can find where its hiding.  do you have a good registry cleaner?

not to discourage you, but its never a bad time to start backing up files or moving them to your storage drive. :)

happy hunting!

Re: Sites Redirecting to Advertisement, Not to Needed Page

I have done several searches before I updated this topic. I couldn't get a clear cut explanation. Spybot is the only scanner that finds it. I delete it. I remove the ips it adds with my HJT, but still it returns. The exact name that Spybot gives it is Zlob.DnsChanger. Thanks for trying.
