For those that filed an extension to file their 2006 taxes, October 15, 2007 is the deadline. Just a few days away, Monday will be here before you know it. So you have this weekend to finish up and complete your return.

E-filing is still available. If you purchased your own tax software, such as Turbo Tax, you are still able to e-file. I have personally waited to file my taxes this year for two reasons. One, because I wanted to test out Turbo Tax and the ease of filing at the last minute. I have all my information ready and am expecting a return and will use the direct deposit offered to get my money quicker.

The second reason was because of college and tuition matters regarding my son. I was unclear as to which credit I should take until he re-enrolled for the 2007-2008 education year. According to the IRS website there were available tax breaks regarding this, but it was too late to include it on the 2006 tax forms. For more information about this and other breaks go here: Extender Tax Breaks .

If your income is at or below $52,000 try Free E-File . This link will open a new window and take you to the IRS website where they will explain if you are eligible to use Free E-File.

The IRS also offers their own IRS E-File .

Happy filing!

Lynn

Re: 2006 Tax Year Filing Extension - It's Timezy

Happy to report that I filed my taxes online with Turbo Tax about 30 minutes ago. It went quite well, except for my State taxes.

Since I was expecting quite a large refund, I made the mistake of assuming that I would get a state refund. Wrong. I had to pay a penalty because I owed $27.00 in taxes to the state. The charged me $1.00 for penalty making my payment $28.00. I have already printed my state return, written them a check and mailed it at the post office, while my hubby sat and entertained our grand-daughter.

My federal return I was able to file electronically, but I was pretty upset with Turbo Tax because they charged me about $29.00 to file it online. I thought it would be free since I had already purchased the 2006 Turbo Tax Software. I will take that problem up at a later time, but for now, I had them deduct the cost from my refund.

At this point, I need to check Turbo Tax daily to get verification from the IRS and see if they require a hard copy of signature verification. I was instructed not to print the hard copy verification until I received confirmation and at that point Turbo Tax software advised me they would walk me through through the process. It should be painless, I just need to remember to mail it as soon as I print it.

So, all in all, filing an extension and waiting till the last day, today, October 15, 2007 worked out pretty good except for assuming my State Taxes would net a return. And the fact that hubby wasn't crazy about waiting for our money.

Which gets me to the point of amended returns. If you already filed your taxes and wasn't able to take late-developing tax breaks, you should start looking at that right now.

There are some taxpayers whose deadline extends beyond today. Anyone serving in Afghanistan, Iraq or other combat zones, plus anyone affected by recent natural disasters.

Below are some recently granted relief areas in the United States. Visit your IRS website for more details.
